lockup

my friend has me stumped with their computer. THey said that whenever they use win media player and aim and any other progs together it locks up, but you can still move the mouse around but you can't click anything, and the keyboard doesn't work. WEll i know the lockup is not due to heat because i tested that and psu and such( i put my enermax in and it did the same thing) Well i was then waiting for her to get back and i popped a music cd in the dvd drive and i was doing some things and then when i click on the drive the computer froze again and the dvd drive wouldn't open. But, the rw opened fine and i had to use the old paper clip to get the drive open. Now she never said that happened before just that is would lock up as mentioned above.

Her specs are
p3 866
256 mb ram
she has an old 12x plexwriter
and the dvd drive is generic

Does anyone know what is causing this problem?

Is it a branded computer like Compaq where their OEM OS locks up every 2 seconds?

Checked for Virus?

Check the bootup for like any strange keys?

Make sure nothing is running while you test it...
