Right now I have a pos 15GB 5400RPM HD, and I don't trust it anymore and wana replace it.
I'm guna buy a new IBM - 40GB - 7200rpm- 60GPX...
My question is, what would be the easiest way to copy the OS and everything on the HD from the old HD to the new one.
I wana make the new IBM the master and the old 15GB a slave for d/lin and storing files on it.
Could I just put the New one in, set the jumpers to master and slave on the old 1, boot up with a start up disc and just copy everything? or would that not work?
Like what steps would I use to do this?
The reson I wana copy everything is I just reformated a lil while ago (didn't make another partition, forgot) to use Ghost, and I don't wana reformat again so soon,, just got everything running nice again.
I guess u can say I'm too lazy. :P
If someone could explain it to me would be great.
thx =)

Ghost or Drive Image would be my suggestions.

Could I have the new drive set to master (still unformated) and the old 1 that still has the os in and when I boot up will it default boot from the master drive,, or the 1 with the OS on it?
If it still boots from the 1 with the OS on it even tho it's a slave I could make 2 partions on the New drive, don't set any active, Get get to windows and ghost the old HD onto one of the partitions on the new drive? Think it would work?
Does that make any sence or em I just goin crazy?

BTW whats Drive Image? I've never herd of it.
Another type of ghosting program?

BTW whats Drive Image?

From the makers of PartitionMagic: http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/

DriveCopy seems to be what you need. http://www.powerquest.com/drivecopy/

PQ Drive Image as stated above.....Power Quest is the mfg. Been around a long time and very handy utility. They also make Partition Magic which will let you create/delete/resize partitions on the fly w/o losing data. (why am I starting to sound like a broken record? LOL)

I've used it several times and had no problems.....however there's always room for user error.

or if you have another computer in the house (or have access to)...
Boot up with that computers Current HD/OS
and put the other two HD's (15 and 40) in...
then you can do a strait copy from the 15 to the new 40

I didn't bother with ghosting, because when you do that, you have the same software-related problems you did on the first one.

When I got my new HDD, I formatted it in NTFS (Windows XP), installed a baby-spankin' new copy of Windows XP, then proceeded to copy files from my old HDD to the new one. New HDD set to master, old HDD set to slave. The old HDD was having horrible head problems, so I had to take it painfully slow, copying only a handful of files at a time.

If you don't trust your HDD anymore, I suggest you do the same. Don't copy huge directories, you'll end up with corrupt files if your HDD is having problems. Copy only a few (10 - 20 files or 100MB) at a time. It takes a long time if you have alot of games that you need to copy (game saves, config files, downloaded maps and what not), or if like me, you save all your program setup files.

Take it easy, don't rush it.

Edit: In my case, I could just ise Windows Explore to drag files from old to new HDD. If you use a different OS, you may want to confer with someone farmilliar with that OS.

It's not really the files like games and movies and stuff I'm worried about transfering, I already have all that stuff on CD's,
Just the OS it self,, ya know how u have make it look all pritty and tweak things the way u like em, install drivers for hardware, I figured just copy the whole thing at once, like a mirror, I'm not havin any problems 'right now' that I wouldn't want on the new HD, just reformated with a clean install not too long ago...
But it prob looks like thats what I'll wind up doin (Prob the easy way, my luck I would run into troble or mess something up anyway) :P
I been wantin to try XP anyway :P
