Hey:
I need a new rts to play to death and replace my current addiction to "rise of Nations". Anyone know a good rts in the rise of nations & starcraft frame (i.e resource gathering, a gazillion units types and a combination of economic and military stradegy to win). I don't know; whats good these days

Here's an old one for you, Battle Zone 2.

Warhammer 40k dawn of war looks cool and looks a lot like starcraft.. I went RTS searching and decided to just wait until sc2 is released. You might try warhammer40k or command and conquer 3 (although I didn't care for the cc3 demo). I really enjoyed company of heroes.

Maybe world in conflict?

I liked Rise of nations a lot too, but the closest thing ive found to it that is fun is Civ IV. However, that's turn based. You might try the new Red Alert though, I think that is similar to SC style.

The one I've heard the best words about is sins of a solar empire. I am not sure on the single player content...

But it's only 20$ right now.

not so good... got it played it... for like a day... was different, but the combat system just felt, idk, off...

CnC is always a classic. I still play the original (had a helluva time getting my old ms-dos cd to play in vista, I'll tell ya.) I actually like CnC 3: Tiberium Wars, and Kanes Wrath a lot as well (pre-patches... EA has a way of nerfing games with patches. People complained that the Scrin were over powered, but that just makes it all that much better when you kick their asses :D )

Supreme commander is also one to try....

That's another one I want to play. I really need to get some RTS games, I used ot play them like crazy when I was a kid.

Forged Alliance is worth it too... the extra faction is pretty bad ass!! plus a few units are added to each faction too... plus it's dirt cheap

Another vote for the Supreme Commander Gold Pack. An absolute bargain and nothing else provides a bigger sense of scale. It's pretty complex, but extremely flexible. Try out the demo, but please note that the full game has had many many changes, and it's a superior experience to say the least. It's strategical rather than tactical unlike Starcraft and C&C type games and if you want that kind of gameplay, Dawn Of War 2 does it better - it's just that much more focused.

ummm, I believe he asked for resource gathering, and if I recall (not positive, so I could very easily be wrong) DoW2 doesn't involve gathering resources.

There are alot of really good RTS coming out soon.

Demigod
Starcraft2
The new warhammer40k
The new supreme commander

Sins of a solar empire is my favorite RTS atm.

Sins of a Solar Empire is a pretty good game. Supreme Commander wasn't as good as TA though. The poor performance really hurt it.

I would say Sins of a Solar Empire as well. I'm a big fan of Rise of Nations as well and I also like Sins a lot. Both very good games.

I was just saying that DOW2 shouldn't be overlooked despite it not being exactly what he's looking for, it's still a very good game.

Warhammer 40k actually has a long and detailed history.

This. ^^

If you think Starcraft has a background story, it's nothing compared to the depth of 40k. Granted the game itself doesn't really enlighten you to it but the material is out there. It's a much richer universe than any video game story.

I like the 40k universe, its pretty freakin awesome, which is why I got DoW 1, but I didn't care for it all that much. hopefully DoW2 is better. And I still think that of all the rts games I've played, C&C is the best series ever. Too bad EA bought it from Westwood.

If you like a well mix of resrouce gathering, microing and all that shat, age of the empires 3 + all the expansions.

Dawn of war II is very fun, I also am loving Demigod, but those arn't resource gathering type games, they are more control and hold points

Pondering your question immediately makes me want to try it myself: Setup a ramdisk and put your page file on it. I'm thinking I might do that myself, since I'll have 8GB of RAM. Waiting on the other 4 since it's being shipped via snail mail now.

lol that sucks... as for the ram disk i thought if you disabled the page file it would automatically use your ram instead...

where can i find this ram disk? and what happens when i restart will it automatically create the disk again?? and is it free?

Have you ever heard the term, don't judge a book by its cover?

Well AOE 3 is an awesome game, so is AOE 2. Company of Heroes is nice as well.

My favorites - Age of Empires and Company of Heroes. Company of heroes just rox so bad. Too bad balance is flawed as in any other RTS, but awesome graphics and strat

LOL so true. I've played a few top ten players in the past, they're micro masters, but it's surprising how you can catch them off guard, they barely scout their enemies and tend to rely on their ability to build faster than anyone else a bit too much sometimes

I'm gonna have to get Supreme Commander. If only due to the beauty of it.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is the only one I'm playing right now.

I could not get into the second newest C&C, I am going to pick up C&C:RA3 if I come across it for a great price.

I miss starcraft and cant wait for sc2 heh.

Sins of a solar empire along with its $10 expansion, entrenchment. Fantastic rts and a robust modding community (star wars mods w/ star destroyers to name one). Only downside of the game is that it doesnt have a campaign.

"vanilla" sins of a solar empire is $20 to the best of my knowledge and the recent expansion, entrenchment, is $10 and available through Stardock's steam-like-app, Impulse.

04-29-09, 02:42 PM
no i mean do you have to pay a monthly fee?

Doogiehowser
04-29-09, 03:07 PM
Nope, no monthly fee. Just a one time purchase. No DRM either which is also a plus.

If you are not familiar with the game, heres a few things that could be either a turn off or not. The the games are long, specially on medium - huge maps (30 planets - 100+ planets are the avg.) By long, im talkin 4 hours and most likely more. i have a custom map / "galaxy" that has 13 star systems and 250ish planets that ive been working on for a good 12 hours or so. Mind you the AI is set to the hardest difficulty so its not a cake walk.

All in all, if ur expecting a DoW type rts in terms of each match length and is what u want, sins may not be for you. if contrary, by all means, its one of the best rts games ive played in years.
