View Full Version : Can I make internal External WITHOUT ENCLOSURE? (still have it sit in my pc)

Is this possible? I connect a USB cable to my pc, and connect the end to the other pc and the other pc will see my internal hard drive... just as if it was an external usb hard drive.... and both PCs will be able to access the hard drive simultaneously.

OR even better if i can do this (same as above but with external hd):

Connect an external hard drive to my computer, then connect my computer to another PC and have both PC's see the external hard drive and read and write off of it at the same time.


Basically I have a DVR (SET TOP BOX) that records on an external USB disk, and Im going to build a computer behind my TV and I want to be able to access the disk that my DVR records on from my home network so I can watch the recorded videos on any computer in the house.

First of all, many actual DVRs encrypt the saved data, so you may not be able to access it anyway.

I think all you really need to do is attach the drive to one PC and share it between both PCs, I think you may be making it a bit more complicated that it needs to be.

My dvr saves the data unencrypted, I know this because I can plug the drive into my laptop and play the video files off there (its a free to air satellite PVR). I think you are assuming that the PVR is a computer PVR... no, its a set-top box.

No, its as complicated as it seems, trust me:

- I want the dvr to be able to access the drive AT THE SAME TIME as other computers are accessing.

- I can't connect the dvr to a computer because the PVR as a "external usb in" and as soon as I disconnect it from the PVR the PVR won't be able to access that drive.

- PVR has no home network capability

- As soon as I disconnect the external from the computer then the computer won't be able to access it.
