alright here it is i have my PC downstairs my room upstairs and i want to get a laptop in my room so i can go on the net from up in my room so obviously i need a router, ill probably get that blue linksys i see alot, so ill plug the cable modem into that, then from there one port going to my pc then to my ps2 then another to the laptop up in my room, so my q is what laptop should i get?all i will use it for internet and maybe 1 game, and if possible an ethernet port thing on there too any of u guys know a good one?

and last but not least ill need a really long ethernet cable, ive never seen a really long one before but there has to be one out there but the prob is i cant have the cable going through my house from the first floor to second i might have to have it go outside from floor to floor my only concern is rain, will that mess up the cable or possibly even mess up my pc?

thanks for any help u can give me

expensive, but you could just get wireless network. Prolly run ya about $400.

Cheaper would be via the telephone lines. You can find kits that use your existing phone lines in the house as network cables. (poor quality, but works)

You won't need a router or hub or anything if you are just connecting 2 systems. See this (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59676) thread for details.

you are buying a laptop just to connect your downstairs system to the internet? Heck of an investment for something a cheap PC could do.

400-500mhz with 128mb of mem would be perfect for just surfing the net...
I wouldn't buy a comp off ebay cuz the fear of something being wronge with it, but my brother in law has scored some nice laptops off there for cheap. I just don't have that luck :P
An idea for ya tho if ya need something cheap =)

I just took a quick look on ebay, avg looks about 300-600bux for a 500mhz laptop....
and for the ethernet card, laptops don't have normal pci slots like pc's do,, none that I know of anyway :P
u'll have to get one that's eather PCMCIA or external USB

my dad has 2 computers on a small LAN with a cable going from one to the other, no hub needed. i'm sure it'd be easy enough to set up.

Yes cross over cable.

Try reading the stick in "Internet and Networking" really gets some knowledge towards networking.
