View Full Version : cat 9.2 and 9.1 "Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed"
I have vista 64, and the 4830 and it keeps blue screening on me with the following message:
"Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed"
It seems to haapen with any modest overclock, but can't be sure yet if it happens at stock speeds.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?

How about the 8.12's?
Maybe the card just isn't an overclocker...
it ocs with out artifacts up to 690/1090 i think it goes farther too. I could try 8.12 but maybe you are right maybe it just does not want to oc?
i was hoping its avista issue with a work aorund, but google has not turned up anything.

Nah i doubt its a vista issue... iv had none what so ever...
What temp is the GPU at when you are OC'ing it?
stays at 50 as far as I can tell... I decided to back off the oc and then bump it up slowly untill the problem returns, maybe my card is just not stable at the high oc.
edit some temps in th 55C range, thats not bad imo
Are you, by chance, using Avast as well? I ask because I've been getting a lot of crazy errors with this card and drivers beyond 8.6. In the past I rectified this issue by disabling Aero (and I'm still not sure where the problem was with that). Then I disabled Anti-virus software and everything was fine. And now I'm toying around with the fan speed and the problems are coming back. I'm trying to localize the issue before I go all RMA on this mother.
I'll be reformatting soon and trying again with Vista. If that fails, I'll try it on XP. Right now, there are zillions of theories floating around the net about this Display Driver crash issue.

nope i dont use that, but is this this a wide spread issue? it seems like it might be from what you said?

Weird no issues here with my 4870, Vista 64bit, and the 9.2's. I am on a fresh install. You have SP1 and all the updates?
yes I do have all the updates and this is a fresh install also, vista 64
after reading the link I am starting to think I got a bad card becuase if i stress it with a moderate OC, it responds with driver resets, and if I stress it with a higher OC I get driver reset not responding BSOD.
furter testing shows that it wont do this unless I oc the card past 600 on the core, so Im fine witht that I guess I just did not get a crazy overclocker in vista.

I'm glad you brought that to my attention. It's good to hear the problem is being acknowledged. There is a very lengthy (2 year long) thread going on at Driverhaven: http://www.driverheaven.net/vista-radeon-display-drivers/133188-vista-7-3-display-driver-atikmdag-stopped-responding-error-52.html . Lots of frustration, some suggested minor fixes with hit or miss results and a whole lot of reading.
What do your Event logs say?
how to check my event logs?
uggg... I just had a dispaly driver reset at 600/1000.... this card is 575/900 at stock...
how to check my event logs?
Start Menu > Search Box = "Event Viewer"
Errors involving this issue show up in the Windows Logs > System selection. Atikmdag.sys is usually the source.

i have about 11 of these which seems about right.
at stock speeds I have yet to see this error, at moderate overclocks the error happens, and at around 700/1090 it will generate a BSOD with the driver reset error.
so I dont oc my card even though at 700/1090 there are no artifacts at all... to me it feels like its a driver/vista 64 issue and not the hardware becoming unstable at high clocks but I am not an expert, its just a gut feeling.

It may not be the CATs (well maybe if the bios voltage has been reduced.) I had this problem with a HD4870 and once the clocks were reduced the 'problem' disppeared. I suspect your VRM may be over heating. If that is happening you could try and increase VRM cooling to max out your OC.
the xfx card has a nice cooler, it seems to be in thr 55C range under an OC, is thats consistant with vrm overheating?

You may just be measuring the Core temp.memory, or both but as you raise the frequency of the card you may exceed the VRM (voltage regulator module)capabilities not the core/memory temps. I do know that the VRM temps are usually much higher than the the other temps and for some reason are also usually poorly cooled for increased loading.
EDIT: I think Everest has VRM temp monitoring
