View Full Version : Please say it isn't so :( Hpt array doesn't work with a promise controller?

My epox bios died, I picked up a new mobo that has the promise RAID controller, but it doesn't see my array?
It seems that if you move a highpoint array to a promise system it won't see it:eh?:
Say it isn't so, OH please say there is a way around it.
My burner died about 2 months ago, so no backup exists, have I lost everything?

I'm guessing yes.....different controllers may controll differently and not be compatable.

If the info on the drives is that valuable to you, I'd suggest you buy a highpoint RAID card and plug it in your new board. =(

Considering they are both totally different types of hardware, I'd say you're screwed. Promise and HPT controllers assign their RAID arrays differently to begin with so before the drives are even formatted, they are different.

I was thinking of a way around it but I can't think of anything that even might work. If when you boot up and the drives are recognized by the Promise controller as a striped array, you may have a chance. If they are seen as two individual drives when you boot up, you're dead in the water.

OK I am reloading, and thanx for your response!
I did the setup for the array and booted from a disk, but the me boot disk can not find a bootable drive, it states that I must use fdisk etc... to make the drive bootable, but it can't see a C drive, so I do I run fdisk or anything else on a drive that it knows is there, but can't see?

When I boot the me disk it states:

1 the drive may need to be partitioned, etc,,

2 you may be using 3rd part sware, etc...

3 the spill about viriii

when I rin the setup fir win on my cd it states:

Cannot create a temp dir

I go into fdisk my 74 gig partition is there and active? WTF

So, I'm thinking I can get XP pro, or even 2k to load, and maybe I haven't lost everything. They both state these programs can not be launched from dos. They are upgrades, Man, if anyone has any other suggestions, other than formatting and starting with ME, I'd be so gratefull!

FYI:

When displaying partition information:

Partition=1
Status=A
Type= NTFS
Volume Label= <Blank>
Mbytes=76340
System=<Blank>
Usage=100%

Yes sorry to say that's the problem. You can't move an array from one controller to a different one and still access it. Usually with onboard raid controllers the array information is stored in the controller's bios. Little if any information regarding the array is stored on the disks themselves. If you move the array to a new controller that doesn't have any information about that setup it can't access anything.

FDISK reads the way the Promise controller feeds it the info and that's why it sees it as one disk.

WinME can't find a boot partition because in the state your drive and controllers are in now, there technically isn't one.

I'm 99.9% sure no matter what OS you try, you're not going to be able to recover what you have without using another HPT370 RAID controller, as Shadow suggested.

If you already tried building a new array with the Promise controller, your data is already gone.

Thanks for all the help guys!
Is there not a way to load an XP or 2k upgrade CD if I have a full 98/ME one?

not w/o installing 98 or ME first.....and losing all your data. Upgrade editions are just that.....upgrades. Horrible little creatures actually.

OH yeah, I wanted to ask you guys if you've ever burnt a CPU and not been able to tell the CPU was toast by looking at it? I mean my HSF fell off while I was gone, and I confirmed the chip was toast, but you could not tell by looking at it.

Must be a change in 2k and xp, because I could load an me upgrade by just starting the install, and whent it stated it couldn't find a qualifying product, I just inserted the full 98 cd in the drive and went on, I've read about this before somewhere.
