View Full Version : Anti-aliasing an issue with ATi cards?

I just started to continue my play-through of The Witcher yesterday on my new system here, but it took me half the day to figure out that enabling any amount of AA would cause the game to crash. Everything I was reading around the 'net was pointing to EAX causing the crashes, but since vista doesn't support hardware sound acceleration and I don't have a SB card anyhow, I was quite perplexed.

I'm running the cat 9.1s because I only saw that the 9.2s were out about 15 minutes ago, but everything else in my system is up to date for drivers. The Witcher is also up to the most recent patch, the 1.4 EE upgrade patch. I've tried searching around the web for other people with the same problem, but I haven't hit on anything any closer related than the EAX issue, which was supposedly fixed in the 1.4 patch for the game anyhow.

I don't seem to have any issue with AA and Fallout 3, and the card runs a lot cooler trying to play that than the Witcher.

That's kind of what I'm starting to see... I wonder how I got so lucky and had no issues on my last system

I'll probably install the 9.2s later on today, but definitely post back here if you get around to it before I do, I'd appreciate it.

Well i just tried it and i have to say it is a lot better...

Gameplay is def smoother and a lot of the graphical glitches are gone... although there are still a couple but all the major ones which annoyed me are gone...

So i say it is def worth a try with the 9.2's... the drivers i had before this one was the 8.12's... never tried the 9.1's

awesome... I just installed the 9.2s myself, so hopefully it will help the crashing due to aa. I'll check on that as soon as I figure out why my taskbar and icons are all of a sudden pushed out beyond the edge of my monitor.... grrr.

Thats bizarre....

Something up with resolution settings or aspect ratio...?

I'm not sure what the actual problem is, but I know it's the drivers doing it. I started another thread about it. Everything has my res listed as 1920x1080 @ 60hz, but it's almost like the drivers decided to zoom in a bit and display more pixels beyond what my tv has.

wow, the game does run tons smoother with the 9.2s, plus I've got it running 4xaa, which is the max in the game menu. It's not heating my card up nearly as much either. Now I"m only running about 60-61 as opposed to 78 degrees. I don't get it, but so far I've got nothin' but love for the 9.2s!
