used to have in my laptop a fujitsu 250GB 5400rpm harddrive, it was noisy as hell, and running out of space anyway. so i changed over to a western digital 320GB scorpio black (7200 rpm), needing the extra space, but expecting it to be massivly loud and vibrate a lot.

not a chance - silent as it'll go, can't hear (or feel) the read head scratching along clicking and ticking anymore. only problem is after a vista fresh install my memory usage reports 50% on ible, compared to 29% with all my rubbish installed on my last one.

I've been really impressed with my Samsung drive so far. It's as fast as I could expect for a notebook drive, and it's absolutely silent 90% of the time. It does get a little warm at times, but it's not unbearable. I've been thinking about getting a solid state disk more and more, but I think I will wait a year or two until they come down in price.

I've always been a big fan of Western Digital. Most of the drives I buy are WD's. I bought a WD passport external drive a few months ago and I've been very pleased with it. The transfer speed isn't very fast with my photos, but it is only a USB drive. It runs quiet and cool though, which is very nice.

Replacing a laptop drive is a much nicer upgrade than people think. I can't stand 5400rpm drives anymore. When I got my new laptop last summer I made sure that it had a 7200rpm drive.

It's likely just Vista doing its thing. Give it a few days to finish indexing and a the like, then it should be back to normal.
