View Full Version : Pushing too soon??
I just got this processor last night... been running it at default all day recording temps. So I thought I would push it a little and moved it up to 1.61GHz (11.5x140). Doing pretty good so far... no temp change from default while folding for about 20 minutes.
Am I pushing the processor too soon? Should I wait? Does it matter?
Thanks in advance! :D

i dont see why there would be too much reason to wait but there could be i dont know i am kinda new so i havnt had much experiance pther than my one new AMD and reading the forums:eh?: :D

Thanks all the same :)

Sweet, thanks for the reply. Been folding for 50 mins now and no temp increase from defaut speed. Guess i'll be pushing her a little further later on :D :burn:
Try 12x145 at 1.85V. My old revision KT7A hit that no sweat with the XP1800.

I'll give it a go Hoot... gonna let folding@home hit the 100/100 WU's then i'll reboot and set it at that. Thanks for the advice!
Hoot, I tried 12x145 ... no go
Takes me to 1668.. I guess it cant read the 12x multiplier? I also tried 11.5x145 which also gave me 1668 as well... any suggestions?
Push that sucka till it screms....
Have you increased your votage? As you setup up the FSB and multiplier, you also have to increase your voltage to get it stable.
It's stable... never had a problem with that. Just when I try to go 12x145 ... it acts like it's reading 11.5x145, from what I gather.

sometimes the unlocking job can be faulty i need to redo min it dose that if i try 9X on my athlon if you dont wan to re do it now you mighbe ably to get higher bus:D
It's not unlocked. I dont dare try to unlock it myself hehe.
What other combo's can I try for 1.7GHz ? Hope my memory can withstand the FSB overclock if I push it that far for 1.7 :D

what kind of memory is it? my 256mb crusial pc2100 cas 2.5 is letting me run 162fsb right now but thats about the most i can get out of it
EDIT: oh btw thats at cas 2

If its not unlocked, you cant change the multiplier, thats the part thats "locked." unlocking is not very hard, I did it the other day for the first time on my XP and all multipliers work fine.
Well, got her sitting at 1724MHz (1.72GHz) and been folding for 20 minutes at only 38 celcius. I dont know how my DDR is taking it... fine I hope :D
-Edit- Update: Been folding for just over 2 hours... temp has actually dropped to 37 celcius. VCore: 1.85 || 2.5v Value: 2.65 || 3.3v Value: 3.5 || 5v Value: 5 || 12v Value: 12.45 .. is this good??
That's an excellent overclock. The temp will come down a little as the heatsink settles down against the core from heat and vibration. Now, give it a week or so and try the next bump. You're goint to hit a wall eventually until you unlock it.

Thanks Hoot, I just don't know how much further this Crucial PC2100 DDR CL2.5 can be pushed. I dont want to fry it (the ram), I might end up buying some Kingmax PC2700 with some heat spreaders..
i'v got the same memory at 162 fsb cant take it any further tho i dont think
Hrm.. think I might try pushing it a little further then... i'd be extremely happy if I hit 1.8GHz stable with this setup. I'm happy as could be right now, this is my 1st successful overclock! :D
u'll probly have to increase the voltage to the memory to get it to to take some higher fsb's i know mine is running with 2.8v
hrm... maybe. I just tried to go 1.8GHz (157x11.5). It would post... but never would get to the Windows XP loading screen. So I bumped it down to 1.77GHz and it would get into windows and be at the same temps it is now... but I tried to open dashboard on MBM5 and it locked. Thats the memory making it lock up, right? Not sure if I want to push the voltage higher, dont want my ram shorting out or overheating or whatever :eh?:
I still get it sitting at 1.72GHz stable as can be. I think the memory is what is limiting me?
well with mine at 2.8 it still barely gets warm so i think u should be ok... anyone else have an opinion on memory voltage?
EDIT: btw morbid do u still have your cpu vcore at default?
if u do then u should try uping your vcore as well if u have good cooling
i'll give it a shot and see what happens. When do you know your memory is fried? When it doesn't boot up? Does it do it before it boots or while in windows? I never had anything fry on me, so I would like to keep it that way ;) :D
crusial memory is useually pretty good about voltage... i havent had my memory fry on me yet either even tho i am really pushing it..
EDIT: corrected a typo
ok, that makes me feel better.. i'll try it later tonight when the temperature in the room goes down some. :) Thanks bobt17 and everyone else! :burn:
good luck:) and keep us informed
ok, attempted for 1.8GHz, no go... tried for 1.79GHz, no go.
What's happening is, I set the DDR to 2.7 and it freezes before it tries to load windows... or I set it to 2.79 and it freezes while trying to load windows.. I set it to 2.8 and it gives me a blue screen when attempting to load windows.
Therefor, guess i'm stuck under 1.8GHz until I get some faster memory?
-Edit- messed up on voltage for 1st 2 settings on DDR :D
have u tried uping the voltage to the cpu?? it probly needs more power to hit thoes higher ghz but if u do up the voltage to the cpu it will also get hotter so watch your temps
In BIOS, all I can push the voltage to is 1.8somethin and I think I tried that :(
ok, got it to 1.9 Vcore and mem up to 2.9... still wont do it.. can do 1.76 but if I start to fold then try to do something... it locks up.
How do you volt mod, anyone know?
hmmm how are your temps thru all of this?
right now, she's idling at 35c... full load while folding is 39c.
sounds like u might have just hit your limit then still its a nice oc:)
I check the temp in BIOS right after it locks, it says 36c... perhaps i'll get it further with some Kingmax PC2700 w/heatspreaders and some water-cooling :burn:
omg... I just about gave myself a heart-attack :(
I thought I would add a little more ASII to the heatsink, so I did so.. booted back up to windows... watch my processor make a steady climb to 40c at idle. So I shut down, cleaned off the heatsink and processor using acetone/rubbing alcohol. To my surprise.. the heatsink has scratches where the processer meets it, no clue how that happened.. I never twisted the HSF or pushed down on it. Then.. THEN there was ASII over the edges of the die, so I had to clean it off the best I could, smearing it to where it almost touches all exposed circuitry (gold parts showing). It's somewhat clean now, still residue all over it tho. Now I set it down to 1610MHz.. and it's idling at 32c/33c.
:( :(
Is my processor still ok!?
your processor is probly still fine :) what are the tempratures at full load? the same as b4 or hoter?
have to wait for my heart to stop beating at 1million beats a second here. :(
i'll watch idle temps, then i'll look at load... see if it goes any higher, I hope not :(
why couldn't I have just left it alone :(
-Edit- been folding for the better part of 30-45 mins. at a steady 36c.
Well, got it all cleaned up and now it's at 1.73GHz (1736MHz 11.5x151) ... been folding for about 15 mins... 38c loaded. It always max's out soon after going 100%.. looks like i'm back in business (maybe) :D
kewl :) good work... hmmm now i am inspired to try and speed my own up :D lol i think i need to unlock mine to get it any further tho
It seems pretty stable at the moment anyway... been folding for 25 mins, still sitting at 38c. I'm so happy :D
If I had a little site to slap up a screenshot, i'd show you my bench in SiSoft Sandra 2002's CPU Multi-Media and Mem bench :D
-Edit- been folding for over an hour... full load temp dropped to 37c ... :D
