Hi guys. I just finished Bioshock (awesome game!) and want to get started on something new. This time I'm more in the mood for a fantasy RPG. Any good ones out there?

MMO or single player is fine, but I don't want to have to pay monthly.

I've played Everquest II and didn't like it much. The worst part was paying monthly (made me feel like I HAD to play), but I also didn't like walking around for some stupid quest.

I plan to get Fallout 3, but right now I want something more fantasy than that.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I forgot, it doesn't have to be brand new, but I like good graphics.

Well, There's Mass Effect. Great graphics. Doesn't look like Crysis, But there's nothing to laugh at about it either.

KotoR 1 and 2. ( Star Wars: Knights of the old republic ). Great games, Good graphics.

Some people really enjoyed The Witcher. Fable The lost chapters is also on PC.

Really though, kinda depends on what kind of Fantasy RPG. Scifi fantasy? More traditional type of fantasy ( aka: Warriors, dragons, monsters...etc. )

If you are looking for more of a Scifi feel, Grab Mass Effect or KotoR 1/2. If you are looking more for the typical fantasy style, Pick up Fable, or The Witcher.

Sorry I was unclear. When I said fantasy, I meant fantasy vs. SciFi. The more traditional type, as you put it. I may pick up Mass Effect ant KotoR anyway because they look interesting.

I got The Witcher with my video card. I though it was TERRIBLE. The whole control/point of view just felt wrong to me. But I'll take a look at Fable.

Ultima 7 The Black Gate. Cept you have to find the game on eBay and then download the Exult mod to make it run in windows.

Game will keep you busy forever. Ol'school when games had actual characters and stories.

Recent times, the Baldurs Gate collection will also keep you busy.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just picked up Fable (and Crysis) and will try that out. I wanted to get Mass Effect, but they didn't have it in stock. I'll pick it up when I see it.

I looked at KotoR, but it looked kinda lame. Might be because I ODed on Star Wars back when.

As I said, the game doesn't need to be brand new, but things like "Ultima 7 The Black Gate" does not interest me.

Any good MMORPGs that you don't need to pay for monthly?

You can go on steam and get mass effect for 20 bucks anytime you want...unless you don't like steam.

As far as MMOs go...It seems if you want a quality experience you're gonna be paying monthly. Some people like Guild Wars all right.

are looking for pc only games, or do you have any consoles? If you have a ps2 console, Star Ocean is a good Fantasy RPG (all of them are pretty good, but if you want good graphics, and long hours, go with Till the End of Time). The Final Fantasy series is awesome, as always. for free* MMO's, have you tried guildwars? I have never played it, but I hear good things about it. Xenogears/Xenosaga is also really good. The story starts with Xenosaga (Ep. 1, 2, and 3) and ends with Xenogears (the original game for the playstation.)

other than that, I can't think of anything that hasn't already been mentioned that really just wowed me.

Wait for Starcraft 2!!!

This doesnt make any sense to me as Starcraft 2 will be an RTS and he was asking for RPGs.

You might consider taking a second look at KOTOR, unless you just hate star wars with the fiery passion of 1000 suns. I think its one of the rpgs that has the most widespread approval, both on and off these boards.

Agreed 100%

I looked at KotoR, but it looked kinda lame. Might be because I ODed on Star Wars back when.

Well the thing is, A lot of people have gotten burned out on Star Wars, especially with lucas focusing SOOO much attention on the clone wars, It's gotten old. But KotoR gets the old Star Wars flame burning again. It gives you a brand new story, with new characters. It makes Star Wars fans remember why they love the movies so much.

That, and HK-47. One of the greatest Video game characters of all time. This assassin droid is more evil than Vader. Plus, he has some of the BEST lines in the entire game.

/me hopes Assassin drois ( like HK-47 ) show up in Star Wars: The old Republic MMO. If they do, I will be very, very happy. Even if i have to kill them...I'll be happy. But it would be nice if they finish the back story on HK-47, and the other droids like him. They kept acting like they would fill in his back story in Kotor 2, but they never did. Which made me a bit sad.

Oh, and Swoop bike races! God, i spent SOOO much time doing that. Too bad they didn't add upgrades to the swoop bikes. Would have made it even MORE fun.

But yeah....Kotor is a BRILLIANT game. #1's story is almost flawless. If you can find a cheap copy somewhere, I highly suggest you grab it. And even if you are burned out on Star Wars, the game itself is more than worth the money.

Did you realize that there are 2 options for view point in The Witcher? The over the shoulder view does take a little getting use to, but you also have the isometric type view where you move by point n click as opposed to FPS style controls. I'm personally a fan of the over the shoulder view, but I can definitely understand how others might hate it.

Either way, if you can bring yourself to try it out again and get used to the controls and views, it definitely fits your criteria for a fantasy based RPG. You could potentially sink a LOT of time into it if you decided to do every possible quest there is to completion.

If you're into side games, there are 2 games/quests that are ongoing throughout it too- dice poker and fistfighting. Neither are necessary, but you can make some good money with the dice poker, and the fistfighting is just kinda cool.

Holy ****!!!! I installed Fable right after my last post, and decided to try it out a bit. I JUST decided it's time to go to bed!!! I just played this thing for 12 hours, mostly straight!!! Fable was definitely a win. Thanks a ton zexmarquies01 and the rest of you!!!:beer::beer:

Since I'll be finishing this soon, I'll take a look at all the other games mentioned. Avery nice list which needs perusing.

Now, however, I am going to BED!!!

EDIT: Oh yeah, sorry I didn't mention it earlier. PC only. I'm proud to say I haven't owned a console since my gamegear!

Nothing wrong with steam. I just like my video game library. The CD/DVD cases just look so nice on my bookshelf. :D

+1 First of all, I'm looking for RPGs right now. Second of all, I DON"T WANT TO WAIT!!! ;) That doesn't mean I won't get it when it DOES come out. :)

Maybe I will take a second look at it after I'm done with the games I'm working on now. But right now, every time I see a jedi or a storm trooper, it makes me shudder.

I tried both views and didn't like either one. But since I DO have it, maybe I'll give it another shot. I certainly wouldn't buy it though.

Thanks for all the help guys! I think I'm set for the next 2 years. LOL

Neverwinter Nights 1 and all its x-pac can be had for super cheap ( platinum edition or whatever its at now ) and you can get NWN2 gold ( with one x-pac, second on barely came out ) for a little bit more. Tons of hours of playing.

Definitely a good way to go. I bought NWN1 before the last expansion, got the expansion for xmas, and it soaked up TONS of my time. Then if you so choose, you could find an online server to soak up even more time on. I killed a good year and a half playing online on one server before I decided to move on to newer games that I hadn't opened yet :) I've decided I'm going to wait to buy NWN2 until all of the expansions are out though. Far cheaper that way.

Do many J-RPG games get released on the PC? I haven't really been paying attention, but I just saw that The Last Remnant is coming to the PC. I hear it sucks, but it makes me wonder if I missed any others... I haven't played any Square Enix and such rpgs on the current gen consoles.

The next hope for a REAL rpg, is Dragon Age Origins. Single player and made by BioWare.

Most JRPG's never touch the PC. Though FF13 will supposedly come out on PC in the far far future, probably like 1 year after the consoles.

Dragon Age Origins will be good for sure. I'm most eagerly looking forward to Diablo 3, but that'll be another year or more. The only thing that disappoints me about D3 is that it's not being developed fast enough. Blizzard needs to get their priorities straight and put all their work force into D3 to release it asap... dammit.

Final Fantasy VII is a good pick. buy the playstation version and run it with epsxe. :)

I also second oblivion, but don't waste your time if you don't get the shivering isles expansion. It's the only part of the game that seems to have some kind of flavour. With regular oblivion, you fight people, crabs, wolves, bears, mountain lions, and maybe every once in a while you might get to kill a troll. All the other sorts of creatures are so few and far between that if you told the npc's about them they'd call you a heretic and throw you in the arena without a weapon.

The problem with Kotor is lack of replay-ability =/ very linear.

I tried Neverwinter Nights 2 but I found it very difficult. My characters kept dieing unless I cheated...also there wasn't much skill use, and it kind of annoyed me how my damage went from 10 dmg per hit to like 15 in 5 levels....

Get an SNES emulator and grab Secret of Mana. I enjoyed that game a lot on my PC. One of the best RPGs I've played. And yeah, I've played Mass Effect(+60 hours), Oblivion (+150 hours), and currently playing Fallout 3( I can't remember now :p).

OMG!! I can't stop playing Fable!! I just finished the original game and started The Lost Chapters. It's really an awesome game. I think I'll have to play it through again as dark (I am good this time) before I go on to a new game.

Next will probably be Mass Effect, then we'll see (maybe kotor).

Thanks again y'all!!

Fable, Fable 2, and Oblivion are the best single player RPGs I've played.

The best free MMORPG I've played is Guild Wars. I played it daily for an entire summer and I didn't even finish the original game itself. I think there are 3 expansions for it now. WoW is a fantastic game, but I got just as much fun out of Guild Wars and I didn't have to pay a left nut every month.

I would say that Guild Wars does not provide the infinite source entertainment that WoW has, but it will keep you busy for months before you start getting bored.
