I read that a good cleaner for copper waterblocks is ketchup, is this true?

I have some black residue on the exterior of my blocks and it seems alcohol won't clean it up. Would ketchup do the job?

On a non-related note: it seems that a MCW60-R2 waterblock is not making complete contact with my 4850 GPU core. The thermal paste is making contact but the copper is not touching it because there is a 1-2 mm space. Does this matter much?

Yes and Yes.

The acid in ketchup will eat off residue on copper blocks. There's also a few other things that work well too. I forget them but i'm sure someone will reply with them.

If your GPU block isn't making contact with the GPU, how's it supposed to cool it?

you can also go straight to the source that gives ketchup its power, vinegar. but ketchup is a bit better in that it sticks to the spots you want it to.

The Block needs to be Solid with less than ohh 10/1000 of an inch away from the chip. The TIM layer should be very very very thin, there should really be no gap, 10/1000 of an inch is almost nothing. A sheet of printer paper is probably 7/1000 of an inch or so. If you can slip 2 sheets of paper or more (about 14/1000's of an inch) between the block and chip something is very wrong.

LOL, I use those sort of measurements. The tightest tolerance between two 1000 lb or so 2' wide printing rollers is +/- 7/10 of 1/1000 tolerance. .254 +/_ .0007 I use a .004 feeler guage to check slitter blade gaps all the time. Many exacting tolerances, what a pain......

I do that sort of stuff and maintain all the electronics. I can go from a laptop and a o-scope to wearing a paper suit replacing 100 lb ink rollers in a minute. Or checking the stuff above. Never the same each day, thats for sure.
