View Full Version : TCP/IP under Windows 3.11?

How would one go about setting up TCP/IP under Windows for Workgroups (3.11)? I was able to setup IPX/SPX and NetBEUI, but that does me no good, since my DSL requires TCP/IP, and all the other computers on my network only use TCP/IP. And I'm not going to change the settings on the other computers, as only one of them are mine.

It uses an Intel EtherExpress 16 NIC. Any help would be appreciated. And I have all 8 setup 3.5" floppies, if I need to add something from there.

I spent that last 30 minutes typing out an explanation of how to do it and just finally said "screw it" and looked for a guide.

This (http://www.yale.edu/pclt/WINWORLD/WFWG311.HTM) looks to be the best of the bunch. Hope it helps.

Yes it supports TCP/IP. It would be completely stupid if it don't! ;)

Check microsofts website out to see if you need an update. Make sure all networking components are installed.

The only network settings it allowed were NetBEUI and IPX/SPX. But thanks for the link, Jon, and I'll hit up MS site to see what they got.

Try here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q111682) for the TCP/IP downloads from microsofts site.

Wasn't sure if you had the TCP/IP stack package already installed or not. You'll need to download and install it if you can find it.

Probably buried deep in MS's FTP site.

Other than whatever came on the floppies for Win311, I didn't install anything. So I'll check out the links, and should be getting an email with more info and files. We'll see what we shall see!

I was able to get 32-bit TCP/IP setup, and I could see the computers across the network, but couldn't access them from eachother yet. Still playin' with it.

One question though: is there a Network Neighborhood-like function in Win3.11, where I can browse the other computers on my network, like I can in Win98?

A little reply to Kahnza: Microsoft must be stupid (and they are :)) for not including TCP/IP... of course, Win 3.11 came out before the Internet was even really around....
