Upfront and straight forward... Is memory cooling necessary? And if it is, what are the benefits?

passive is... but no need for a fan... heatspreaders are good for over 140mhz IMO... ill always use them..
I don't see how they can be with present technology.... RAM is volitile to begin with - it is just something to waste your money on.

yea, but for a few extra dollars id just get the heat spreaders.. i mean they just lok to elite neways... and they awesome if you have a blue mobo like me ;)

I dunno... those Thermaltake memory kits are proven to be worth a few MHz when you've got the DDR voltage cranked up. General theory is that any semiconductor works better when it's cooler. So in addition to processors, that includes IC's and RAM chips.
Now, those blue passive Thermaltake kits are cool. I'll probably try some out sometime. The Copper colored (actual copper?) kits are overkill. If you've got good case flow that's all the air you need.

I agree. As long as you have some good case ventilation, your ram really doesn't get that warm.

If you have run out of other things to buy for your computer, sure spend the money on them, but im sure you could find something else that benefits you PC more.

The only memory that I think cold benifit from additional cooling is Rambus. DDR doesn't get all that hot, but I have seen bechmarks where it helped a squeeze a few more Mhz out of the system. Is it worth it? Probably not. But, it won't hurt anything either.

Its only nessecary when you''ve got the RAM voltage @ 3.2V from the normal 2.5V
Otherwise you could kill your ram, but if your like me you'll put a Delta on it:rolleyes:

Cool case=cool ram.
My pcs are all "ghetto-ized" in appearance: if it doesn't make it go faster or more stable, it doesn't go in.
If you are into appearance mods on the other hand, some cool heat spreaders look great through a window.
Better off just making sure that you have some airflow over the chips (no airflow and spreaders won't do anything anyway!) IMO.

well ddr ram doesnt always run cool, my ECC cruical ran very hot..
but my new consair pc2400 is cool. but i still have the heat speaders on them just in case... and they look cool neways

Actually in some cases with no airflow aroundthe RAM the Heatspreaders caused more heat to accumilate.
I would avoid them, a Fan is all I need.
The active kits are a joke, the fan pushes out 5CFM!!!!

Heatspreaders are good for looks, but unless you have RDRAM they're not going to give you any more perf.
