View Full Version : I'm thinking of getting Team Fortress 2, Should I get it?

I have been thinking of buying Team Fortress 2 and wanted to know a couple of things.

Are there alot of players online?
Are there too many annoying immature players or unfair gameplay because of hackers?

I recently bought Left 4 Dead on the 50% sale (Thanks, Steam!)
I will be taking my time in beating the single player since I hear it is short, then I will experiment with the multi modes.

From what I hear, Left 4 Dead multi will keep me entertained for a long time. But what about those nights when I just want to mix it up a bit. I need one more online multiplayer fps to satisfy my 'frag fix'

Here is a little background on what I currently have played or am playing.

CSS..."If I had a dollar for every hour I put into this one"
Cod4...been there done that!
UT3...wasn't impressed
Cod5...Is this just a re-vamped cod4?

So should I get TF2?

people here will push their opinions on you like its FACT

I personally hated CSS and I hated TF2

I loved cod4 immensely and think cod5 is even more fun with CTF and TDM with friends and somewhat organized teams. Left 4 Dead is like CRACK I cannot stop wanting to play that game.

I do not like Tf2 at all.

I can see why people like it though, I think its pretty BLAHHH and cartoony myself.

It's got a lot of charm. I guess its not some people's thing...But I think its great. All the classes are very well balanced, and the options keep it fresh.

There are plenty of players online.

Hacks are usually dealt with. Some people can get a little annoying on mic talk, but that's what FPS gaming is it seems.

Love it, and surprised people don't like it.
I guess it's not realistic enough for 'em or something.

The gameplay is more versatile than COD4s, that's a fact for you. :p

It's fun, but it may not be to your taste. Isn't it really cheap on Steam atm though? Read a few reviews and see what you think. :)

personally i love it, and there has been a lot of DLC and updates for it relative to other games.

TF2 is great, one of the few games I've purchased in the last few years that I am actually happy to have payed for, hell, I would pay more for it. It is extremely balanced (the new update is a bit wonky, but I can only assume the Sandman is getting hit with the nerf bat... maybe they will actually replace it with a nerf bat haha) and extremely replayable, I have over 250 hours logged in it, and that's just a rough estimate. It is very cartoon-esque, so if you are a fan of extreme realism it may not be the game for you, I personally love the 60's diesel-punk vibe though. Very humorous too, I find myself laughing at things I've heard many times over, any time the heavy sings or the scout laughs maniacally at someone being dominated just sets me to join them, and I hear new taunts all the time, even after this long (they added a bunch for the scout too in the most recent pack). Most people are pretty mature about voice chat, but you do get the occasional spammer, probably the case with every game though.

To give you some perspective on the games you listed, I love L4D, but I just can't get into the replay value of it, although I occasionally go back for a romp through waves of zombies. I was never good at CS:S enough to play it consistently, but I played it sparingly and liked it when I did. I liked the COD4 campaign but never got into multiplayer, not much of a fan of the 'tactical' fps multiplayer, probably similar reasons for not getting too much into CS:S. Never played COD5 or UT3, so I can't say much there. TF2 is very fast paced action that allows for any style of play as all 9 classes have extremely different methods to them. It is still quite well played too, with tons of servers populated.

Hope this helped a little more than a 2 word response.

I love it. Has a witty charm to it which I love :D

Indeed, its charming and fun. Not in the least bit realistic, but it isn't supposed to be. It gets a lot of free updates, and is generally a relaxing shooter. All different classes are unique, its like a big game of rock paper scissors. I wish I had more time to play it. Or, I wish it were better on consoles (the trash version on consoles now doesn't count).

Good fun, even if I'm critical of the direction Valve is taking it in terms of updates.

Get it.

I'd prolly be close to ya if I didn't meet a wonderful woman 3 months ago, my steam gaming numbers are in the 20 hrs range now every 2 weeks :(

At least you know you got your moneys worth out of TF2.

Ah well at least I know I am not a gaming addict.

TF2 is alright. It'd be better if you have friends who play it and play with them the same time you get online...

For me this game was a must have . As I was a big player of the first Tf ( NOT TFC that was crappy) TF mod for quake one. They have almost nailed the game to the Tee just need Grens that you can prime and I would prob stop playing css .

No, don't waste your money.

I really enjoyed the game, but only for about a 2-3 weeks. It has so much potential to it I think, but they just haven't done enough with it. It just gets old fast. :(

BTW, that is from the perspective of the PS3 version, I'm guessing PC version is superior.

I'm pretty sure this is not a poll.

I think TF2 is one of the best FPS I ever played, but it has been eclipsed by L4D. I actually got L4D and TF2 at the same time but prefer TF2 at 1/5th the price. It kind of reminds me of Tribes 2, loved that one. I am not COD4 fan I bought it for $20 and played MP twice, gave up on that. TF2 is defintely not realistic, its got a cartoony quirky charm to it so if you want structured semi-realistic CS/COD/BF gameplay you wont like it. The game does require teamwork though because of all the counter/balances for all the classes. Although you can just play something like Pyro/Sniper and just run around all rambo like I do.

I've had my self a woman for five years now. Only difference, she plays Team Fortress 2 with me. :p
Matter of fact, the original Orange Box purchase was for her, not me.

Great, thanks for sharing. I think I will get it next week when I get paid. Right now it's 19.99. That is the highest I would pay anyway. I guess I just missed the sale they had recently.

If you are a rewards zone card member at best buy, you can get a coupon for 20 bucks off of orange box which makes it only 10$. Thats cheap enough to just get and try out for yourself.

Meh, I was a long-time TF (and TFC player) and the amount that it was dumbed down for new players really turned me off. They got rid of a lot that made the game unique with air physics and movement control and made it so you pretty much just run around everywhere. No grenades, no conc jumping, etc really killed it for me.

Are you talking about the free membership or the mastercard program. I went to the website, but I really don't want to apply for a new credit card. Plastic in my wallet is not good for me.:screwy:

I am starting to have visions of myself playing this game already. Why must payday be so far away? I hope I don't noob it up too much! I hate being the new guy. Also I heard there are no grenades. That is fine with me, because COD4 can get pretty stale with all the nade spamming. IMO of course.

Can anyone confirm the Best Buy rewards deal? If I can get the complete 'Orange Box' for $10, this would be a steal. Especially since I still need to finish portal.

yea thats the reason i finally picked it up. I already had 2 games purchased from orange box, and tf2 was 20 bucks on steam, so i figured what the heck.

And ya its not the mastercard, they tried to give me one and blabbered on about it so much they forgot to scan my killzone 2. So i ended up getting orangebox for 10 bucks and killzone for free lol.

I bought TF2 the day it came out and played it a ton at LAN parties and online, but buying it now? Valve loves to ruin their games with patches IMO, they killed my interest in CS way back in the beta days when they insisted on re-balancing the game every two weeks. With every new TF2 class update the game just gets less balanced and less fun, and the hordes of players playing the latest update made the game that much worse.

I guess you could still have fun with it if you've never played before, but just thinking about playing with a flocks of noob scouts running around makes me cringe. In fact I think I'm gonna uninstall it...

It hasn't affected the balance tbh, it just makes things more interesting. The patches have been great so far, sure it's a bit of a pain when you get all the achievement *****s coming in but it keeps the game fresh and keeps you on your toes because you have to be aware of new tactics.

maybe they are completely missing the whole point.... ;)

Anyway, TF2 can be fun, it is highly dependent on good teamwork. That can be good and bad. Ending up on a crappy team can be extremely frustrating because no matter how good you are ... you are gonna get steamrolled. Also whenever we get one of the new updates, it is better to just not play at all for a few weeks. You get a lot of noobs coming from other FPS that seem very immature. I seem to get accused of cheating every time a new update comes out. They are not making updates to make us happier, they are making them to sell more copies. I wish they would leave the freaking gameplay alone.

Coming off CS when I started playing, the TF2 gameplay felt slower but more ferocious. I don't know any other way to explain it (unless you are a scout which is much faster).

There have been plenty of bigger FPS games in the past that relied on players getting GOOD as part of the fun instead of giving cheesy little updates to draw in the green from new players. I am not talking about new maps, etc which are normal updates for any FPS. I am talking about unlockables weapons and the achievement idiocy which floods the servers with people doing everything except playing to win the game.

Edit: Also with every update they seem to break the game more than any content they add. Not just unbalancing ... but I mean actually break.

If you really got into CS:S and COD4 you will most likely be disappointed in the lack of actual depth TF2 provides. It's a game marketed towards people that are casually interested in the genre. Kind of like a FPS with training wheels, it's far too "point-&-clicky" for me to get much enjoyment out of it. I prefer more tactical games.
