With your X-fi card you should be able to amp the volume of each speaker, otherwise use the windows volume controller, put the Font, and Center down to half way and crank up the volume on the X-540's :)

What watchthisspace said, or you could go hands-on and put the rear speakers in the ceiling. Just get some of that really powerful two-sided tape.

Here's an awesome paint mockup of how I handled my 5.1

The rear speaker poles are removable for when you don't want them sticking up in the way

I made the poles with electrical conduit, but you could use what you can fine, or can be more creative in thinking up. I actually WANTED to use some thinnish PVC after seeing something similar in a bestbuy setup. It was long and flexed in just the right angle to make placement perfect. But I ended up having to go on the cheaps with it, so I went with conduit as my neighbor had a few extra. I made up some mouse plates for the end of the poles and mounted the speakers on them. The mounts even swiveled for directional placement. As I said, the poles were removable, so I made sockets that attached to the back of my desk.
