View Full Version : i am a monitor killer!
Somehow I have managed to fry up 2 monitors in a month. The first was a 17' Princeton that I had bought used. All it does now is flash the green light and make a clicking sound. The second one is 15' Smile (generic) that just went black. The lights come on, but the screen stays black. So, has anyone taken a monitor to have it repaired? Or am I better off buying new ones?
Oh yeah, my bro-in-law seems to think that me running without a case could have had something to do with it b/c a case provides grounding. (I have since moved my sys into a case, just to be safe) Any info/experience will be much appreciated.

I don't think the case this is a factor... I do think that you either have bad luck, bad karma, or a bad electrical surges that are frying your monitor...
You can also bring it to the repair shop and ask them just to identify the problem and call you back and tell you what the problem and how much is the cost. It maybe just badluck or as Flounder said some power issue blowing some stuff in there, consider using a Power Surge if you haven't.

i have a RAISP - Redundant Array of Inexpensive Surge Protectors.
Wouldn't I see problems with other hardware if power spikes were to blame?

:p :p :p You killed me with that one. RAISP, I 'm gonna steal that from you!
As far as the monitors dying because the system had no case- nope. One of my cases is a cardboard box, and cardboard does not conduct electricity well.
I have seen a lot of people make references to modern computers needing to have components grounded fairly recently and here is a bit of info: not since AT power supplies! The AT psus had a mechanical switch, and had a ground to ensure that voltage spikes didn't make it into the mobo or components. That is all it was for, as I ran some of those systems "out of the box" as well.
Glad you liked that RAISP thing (I was resarching RAID for too long before I posted that). Thanks for the info, but I don't think it will convince the all-knowing bro-in-law!
Hopefully I can find a reputable shop to take a look at the POSs so I don't have to shell out $$ for new one(s).
