Ok, well, I have KotOR and I used to play it way back, and it works great on xp, but I went to play it again (for the first time on this rig) and I keep getting random crashes (game crashes, not the system). now, I noticed that it isn't able to recognize my gfx card at all. as far as it can tell its a radeon, but it doesn't know what. not surprising considering, I guess. Im also running vista x64. Now, I've tried running as admin, running in compatibility mode for xp sp2, even tried getting a no cd exe from gamecopy world (THIS IS NOT PROMOTING PIRACY! It explicitly states on the site that those exe files are for legal owners ONLY), and none of those even phase it. So my assumption is that because its an OpenGL game on an "unsupported" card, thats why Im getting the lockups.

any ideas or tips on how to fix it? I've tried googling it, but all the stuff I find is from like '04 or earlier. I found one place that said they were having an issue with ATI cards and recommended that you use the 4.2 ccc, but that was back when 4.4 had just come out and somehow I doubt that that is an option for me with my gfx card.

nothing more annoying than getting through an entire area of Kath Hounds and approaching your goal and the game locks up.

I had it working, by going to the exe in the main game folder and running it in compatabiblity mode for xp in vista.

well... compatibility doesn't work, maybe theres a hotfix you can use? With a 4850 I doubt CCC 4.2 is a viable option. Other than I don't know, I've never had any problems with my cards (but I don't really use ATI often)

EDIT: I did some research, try adding "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" (without qoutes) to the .ini file for the game.

Have you tried disableing xfire?

you could re-install the game but instead of using the autorun cancel out, explore the disk find the autorun.exe and run that in compatability mode. it really is different than just setting it in compatability mode after the game is installed and has sorted out a few games i had vista problems with.

For what it's worth, KoToR I runs fine in vista (x64) while KoToR II gives errors attempting to load. Both were installed from CD with setup file in compatibility mode and all .exes are set to compatibility mode. I guess it's not too bad, at least I can reminisce with the first game ... still wish kotorII would run though :(.

UPDATE: I found a .dll that stopped the game from crashing. Go HERE (http://forums.obsidian.net/index.php?showtopic=41038&st=0&p=760302&#entry760302)for the FAQ from obsidian (the devs). If you're problem was with kotor1, then this won't help. best of luck
