So I have been looking for a good graphics card to upgrade to, for both running Folding at home, and for gaming...

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8788145&type=product&id=1205450855081

Enter this little gem, a 9800 GX2...for how much again? Wow, just wow...

This after I was reading the review that hardocp did of their piece o crap power supplies:

Geek Squad is there so Best Buy can hit their numbers....it's a complete rip off. I know people that work at Best Buy - and they hate to even recommend telling somebody they need to spend $75 to have Geek Squad come and set up their universal remote. Oh wait, how about the Xbox 360 optimization?? LMfao.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the rip-off prices of your in-store items. Not the rip-off prices of your services. We understand your services are meant to rip-off the common folk who have no idea that spending 750 dollars on a laptop repair doesn't make much sense....but the common folk isn't going to buy a 9800 GX2 ;)

I just did a complete revamp of a pc that was owned by a Geek Squad employee, let's just say I was speachless at the incompetence.

One example is he used more than an entire packet of white thermal paste, so much TIM came out the sides it took me an hour to clean the heatsink and the mobo, that was just one issue I had to fix. Geek Squad has some people that are better than good at what they do, but this guy had no business near a computer.

yesterday when I asked the GS tech about the DDR2, I also asked him what speed it was.

His response verbatim "uh.... do you mean the pc speed?"

"......." "yes the PC speed"

"uhhhh.... umm, oh its 667 speed it says it right here"

"gimme it, no that is speeds it is compatible with, it is PC6400 aka DDR2-800"

"oh"

"Glad to see that GS has really stepped up their hiring practices, did you get the job because you found the power button first or last?"

Best Buy GS is still a joke most of a decade after I quit working for Best Buy, it is still staffed by the people who know enough to be dangerous but not enough to question the use of certain tactics to get a sale.

ok i am sorry but i completely disagree.

comeplete NOOBLETs can figure out newegg, its not a complicated site, its a heck of alot cheaper (although there are cheaper out there) and if you get a bad part they are more than willing to help out, replace it and/or give you a refund.

BestBuy reminds me of my MMORPG games, where some of the players try to sell certain items at 2-3x the normal price, and the only ppl who buys those items are the ones who didn't know better and didn't look around enough to realize they just got ripped off.. LOL

Guys, what do you expect?

Follow these two rules on ANYTHING and you will be better off.

1. Don't ask for advice from somebody who makes minimum wage or close to it. They probably know less than you do.

2. Don't ask anybody for advice who works on commission.

Doing either of the above is like walking into a Ford dealer and asking whether you should buy a Focus or a Corolla.

i thought Best Buy didn't work off commission anymore, either way they can give you some horrid advice.

Best Buy isn't commission and hasn't been for at least 9 years that I know of. But they got to try to sell as many of there service plans possible otherwise they will get moved to cashier or canned.

They sell there products at MSRP... no if or ands about it. Its not like they sell alot but if you need something NOW it is there and that is where they get you with there prices on certain items.

And GS don't get me started, hell even computer department, when I was hired I said I'd like to be in there computer service department (not GS at the time) or computer department. They said I didn't have the qualifications for it..... yeah a little certificate saying ooh i was paying attention in class. I was rather ****ed about that back then but I wasn't there for a really long period of time since the whole store I was at lacked any logical place at putting people in departments or when people should of been fired.

Thats crap dude. It depends on the type of person. I had a small commission base for a while at my job, if people asked me what would fit there needs better most of the time the cheaper would work better.

Now that honest. If your honest people will get turned to you and you will make more money.

The funny thing is, someone bought one in January this year! They could have gotten a GTX295 / HD4870X2 and ripped that up!

I suppose the employees are only as good as the managers allow them to be. In most cases I've heard (corpsejockey was in the noob squad), the store manager or your immediate boss would push you so hard to make a sale that you either pull a con or prepare to be fired soon.

Yup that exists... Everything is numbers to them. Probably a little more lax now with the way the economy is as well there direct competitor Circuit City is out of business.

I'd go with the corolla hands down ;)

It seems to me that is why our economy is in the crapper right now...profit profit profit...their like a bunch of mindless little garden gnomes.

I still find it be hysterical how the psu blew out their transformer at 75% of it's rated load capacity...

I haven't gone to Bestbuy in a loooooong time... I just can't think of anything that they might have that I want, except maybe candy. The pricing is bad, the service is poor, the selection is horrible. I equate this store to a circuit city, I don't see how they can avoid bankruptcy if they keep running it the way that they do. It's really a shame because there are no local stores that really fill my niche for electronics and repair equipment or computer components.

That too but I would love to be able to think of something that I need during those periods when I have free time and just go run down to a store and buy it rather than having to wait for shipping, especially on weekends.

If newegg had roughly 1400 stores in US alone I bet their prices would be higher than the current online prices. Im not justifying BBs pricing, but there is a reason behind it.

Futureshop is operated in Canada, it is run by the same company and is identical in pricing and the brands they sell, just a different look. In most locations they are build side by side. Most ppl still prefer shopping in store, mostly people who have little idea tha they could save alot by shopping online. But it is unbelievable how people would still shop in store and I bet BB, and FS make more money during the holiday season compared to online stores. More so, people prefer having the convenience to go to their nearest store and just return or exchange their purchase as opposed to paying for shipping and waiting for it to arrive. In that sense, shopping from the store is more convenient, and those are just some of the services which people pay the high price for when buying from BB, FS and stores alike...also having the option to ask the people about the products.. but yeah... its just sad and surprising at the same time how many people ACTUALLY fall into the crap that the employees feed them with and lure them into their crappy service plans and what not.

print media is getting smashed also
just a matter of time before the internet engulfs the world with low prices, which is a good thing for consumers. probably not so much for employers/employees :(

Best Buy is like any other store for the most part. They were great when they first came around. Had good selection and prices. Then slowly their selection got worse and their price crept up and up and up until they're the the garbage can they are today. One retail store that is over 100 years old and has never done me wrong is Sears. I can not say enough good stuff about them.

That article about the Geek Squad employees was so similar to my experiences at Circuit City when they were open and I was working in their computer department. When I would do tech help with peoples computers wed all copy music and the like to a "shared" external hard drive to distribute among ourselves. We'd cycle the hard drive between employees based on work schedule so one person could bring it home and unload what they wanted to their home computer.

I remember one particular customer very well given the goodies we found on their computer - there were roughly 30 movies on this womans' computer of her and different guys and the guy who was the one doing the work burned the movies onto blank dvds, copied them to the external hard drive, and then "wiped" the computer blaming a stubborn virus so the customer wouldn't think he'd seen them.

Oh ya, we all used pirated software to do our tricks - the stuff they gave us to use SUCKED and caused so many complaints! It became more worthwhile to use pirated software then to listen to customers complain something wasn't right or managers complain something was taking to long. Even made some money on the side when customers would ask about getting certain expensive software suites cheaper I'd install a pirated copy for a fraction of retail price - cash in my pocket of course so no record exists and I'd provide them with install files in the event something happened. This lasted until the day I quit.

All in all, sounds like nothings changed at retail tech help since I left that job. Working for IT at my school is so much better... and honest.

EDIT:
One retail store that is over 100 years old and has never done me wrong is Sears. I can not say enough good stuff about them.
That was the last job I had before coming to Miami for school. That was a good place to work! Made BANK because of commission.
