Hey lads,

A mate of mine has a Asus HD4870 and I am sure that it is malfunctioning. The fan just does not spin and his card is running insanely hot, so hot that his computer just shuts down after about 5 minutes. So I said to him RMA it, this is not normal. His fan worked fine for about 3 months or so.

Now we RMA'd it to the distributer and they tell him that the card is not dead. Which I am sure it is, because as soon as we plug in another card everything is fine, no temperature problems whatsoever and the fan spins.

Now my question is, is it possible that a cards fan does not work in one motherboard but as soon as you plug it in another motherboard it does work?

The fan on my old HD3870 never worked quite right either. I'm assuming it was an issue with temperature monitoring/reporting or a problem with the BIOS. I don't know what was the cause of the problem. All I know is that the fan always spun at 40% speed regardless of how hot it was. The only way I found to fix it was to get Riva Tuner and set it up to automatically increase the fan speed percentage at various temperatures. It was fairly easy to do.

This will tell you how to do it:

It's actually pretty fantastic once you get it all set up. It's a pain in the butt, but in the end you get more control over the heat and noise coming from your card :)

Perhaps it is your motherboard causing it, try it in a nother pc?

Well he is going to them with his computer to show them that the card is indeed not functioning well. I hope he gets his money back and I myself know I'm never ever buying an asus product again. They dont even accept direct RMA's. Their waiting times on the phone are horrible, in general their support SUCKS.
