Well, I want to stick on NT 4 on a third partion, but I don't have a floppy drive, so I'm trying to install from the CD rather than the 3 boot floppies. Here's my setup, 20 gig drive, C is 100megs for system, then I have D which is 11gigs NTFS for XP, and then just 7gigs unformated to install NT4.

The problem;

When I go to install NT 4 I boot the cd, but when I go to select where to install from, drive C and D is labeled unreadable and corrupt. I can see about D because you need SP6 to read the new NTFS, but C is fat. Well I select to install on the unformated space and then it says cannot complete setup, press F3 to restart. Well, am I doing something wrong, I never installed from booting to cd, is anything different with that then from the boot floppies?

One more problem, is the only way to install 3rd party drivers in nt4 setup from a floppy? I would want to stick NT4 on a scsi drive but without a floppy drive to install drivers I can't.

I have had this problem before, Windows NT has a problem recognizing some drives larger than 8GB. What you need to do is get the latest disk drivers for the NT boot floppies from microsoft.

There is a KB article on it.

Download the updated Atapi.sys from Microsoft's FTP server:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-unsup-ed/fixes/nt40/atapi/ATAPI.EXE

Thanks, I see whats wrong. Yea, I think my brother said something about that. Sucks for me, I dont have a floppy. Maybe I can just use my 486 to install nt4, that has a working floppy. Isn't their a way to install from the harddrive, maybe then I could replace their atapi.sys with the new one. XP won't let me run setup from window though.

yes, copy the contents of the i386 folder ( you do NOT need the alpha, ppc, and other folders, these are for other archectures) to a folder of the same name on the HD (you cannot use the same partition that you will be installing to).
Copy the startup files ( I think they are called winnt.exe) and run them, It will ask for the install path and the source directory.
The source directory is the path to the i386 folder you copied to the HD from the CD.

Have fun...
