Hi, I'm planning on building a file server for HD media and data backups using raid 5. The plan is to store all the HD content on this server and stream it to HTPCs around the house. I plan to backup the backup data stored on the server but backing up terabytes of HD content is not realistically possible in my case.
I plan to use raid 5 and have looked into various raid controllers. Nearly all of the raid controllers that I have looked at support Online Capacity Expansion (OCE) but I was wondering if some controllers were better with OCE than others. I plan to build this machine over the summer and am just researching my options at the moment.
I plan to start out with at least 4 TB of space (hopefully WD comes out with some 2TB black HDDs by then) and add drives as required. How long would it take for a raid controller to rebuild the raid to 4 drives from 3. I'm looking at an adaptec raid controller atm, but I have heard they have horrendously long OCE rebuild times. One guy said 3% was completed after 24 hours when expanding from 8 to 16 drives. At that rate it would have taken him over a month to rebuild :eek:
Did it just take that one person so long because he added 8 drives? About how much time would it take if I added a 2TB drive to a 3x2TB raid 5 array?
