Hello i am currently looking into WC and just wondering if 87C is pretty hot or can it handle more? I have a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400. Right now i am playing Test Drive Unlimited and its staying at 85-90C.

What cooling and what speed/voltages? That is a tad on the warm side, I'd suggest just going with higher end air cooling for now. A lot cheaper and less mess/hassle.

I think the real question is, can your wallet handle more?

That is disgustingly high for water.

What parts are you using?

What are your ambients?

Voltage?

Case?

TIM?

Have you reseated?

I would suggest getting rid of your OC and deal with your heat issue.

Gues i should learn how to ask a question correctly sorry. What i meant to say is i am using stock fan and its not overclocked at all. It runs idle at like 42 and if im doing anything usually 50-60 and if im gaming about 80-90. Like right now its at 53. I have been looking at the Swiftech H20-22- Apex Ultima Liquid Cooling Kit and people say it is a decent starter but do i really need it? Thanks!

In all honesty, I would go for high end air and save some money. Something like the Xigmatek HDT. Liquid cooling is recommended for people with hot CPU's and high overclocks (like me).

Well i would not mind overclocking considering my MOBO is a Asus Rampage Extreme i also have a Radeon HD 4870 with 1 GB ram that i wouldn't mind cooling off to because it runs at 80-90 and sometimes over depending on the game.
Basically i love a super fast computer and i hate any noise. I literally have my computer shut in my closet so i can't hear it when i play games which causes overheating problems more then i already have on both my GPU and CPU. Also I love to run the best games perfect like Crysis ect... I also have 2x1 GB Ocz DDR3 1066 Mhz Ram which yes i know i need to get 2 more 1 GB sticks. Thanks for the help! Let me know what you think i should do.

You might be using some crappy monitoring software. Did it come with the mobo? Then it's garbage. I use realtemp, reason I asked, we usually post temps from each core like 55/57C, not just one temp. Others can hype n on proggies to help, you should play with all of them to learn.

Get realtemp and try again.

Another good idea is to use a program to load the processor that we all use. Then we can at least try to figure out what you got etc.

We also need to know your rig, make a sig like many of us have.

I think your looking at the wrong temp, really. Use Goggle to look up things like 'CPU temp monitor', 'E8400 hot temps' etc. 'CPU load programs', 'PC Case cooling'. You can learn a ton.

those temps are good as.

if yuo're trying to toast it :p
only review sites get up to 87c or something when they try to show how crappy Stock heatsinks do when the cpu is oc'ed. you shuold never be getting past 60 for day to day use :)

OMG. What is the ambient temp of your closet? OMG, get a thermometer and check it. If it's warmer than the room you game in, get it outta there and into some cooler air. OMG, my PC is like a pet, I would never put it in the closet!

Over 80C on a processor on realtemp means an early death. Not counting your CPU, hard drives etc in the closet getting 100's of watts of heat. OMG.

I'm calling the pet protectors before it all dies.

Seriously, accccckkkk, not good methinks.

i would not run my cpu past 69C no way id even turn it on knowing it would get into the 70C range let alone 87C

you have good equipment why skimp on cooling, buy a zalman or anything at this point to get the CPU temp down. and give your poor PC some air to breath lol

Wow... It's not in the closet anymore :) And never will be. Alright im going to buy something decent to keep it below 70C before i play anymore games. Thanks everyone i have learned much knowledge from all of you!

i hate seeing anything over 60C, i'm used to 40 tops currently.

87C as said is way to high. water cooling or high end air are the way to go.

lol my PC has NEVER ran above 40C ... well the E8400 at least .. i cant say much about the i7

with good high end air cooling , which isnt more than like 80 bucks MAX! you can get temps like 50-55 C LOAD

just did a linpack test on my E8400. @ stock speed, under my WC loop its idles at 31 and loads at 43c.

These things are rated to melt around 110c i believe. 90 won't kill it imidiatly, but it will die ealier than one that runs at 40c. your probably looking at more than a couple of years though.

before you buy new cooling, try reseating the cooler thats on it atm. it really shouldnt be hitting those temps at stock unless your ambient is near 40C.

Right now my i7 even keeps cooler lol! (at stock speed it reached 55C in prime95 :P )

What are your temps like running prime95? If they are cooler then when gamming, it sounds like an airflow problem with your case.

The OP has moved to the air forum. His temps were so high because he kept the PC in the closet to reduce the noise. He never said what the ambient temp was in there.

You could consider this thread kinda dead.
