View Full Version : Tualatin Celeron 1.2 @ 1.5Ghz vs. P4

About what speed of the P4 (non-Northwood core) do you all think compares to a 1.5Ghz Tualatin Celeron (SDRAM, 815 chipset). I have not had the chance to bench any P4 systems so I do not really know how my system compares. I know that the Tualatin is faster clock for clock than the Pentium 4. even the P4 on a 850/RDRAM platform. Has anyone done benchmarks comparing the Tualatin with a P4 here, if so please specify...

I'll help ya out... I'll bench my P4 1.8 and post the results. My thinking is that your scores'll probably come pretty close to mine. Note, this is under Windows XP with Sandra 2002.

and the multimedia... hope this helps
jazztrumpet216, I'll bet you just made Feuerrader's day! I didn't realize the P4s were quite that crippled. I just compared my Sandra marks with yours and mine are significantly higher with a Tualatin Celeron at 1.4ghz. I would imagine his are even quite a bit higher than mine. Man, do you think it's just that it's a factory built Dell or are all P4s performing similarly? I'm glad I read this thread, because I've been considering upgrading to a P4, but if this is what they offer, I think I'll hold off for a while. Please don't think I'm knocking your system, because I'm not. I'm sure it's very nice and would probably enjoy having one like it just fine, but I do appreciate your honesty concerning it's performance.
BTW, here are my marks: CPU=3915/1885 MM=7656/9504
Thanks for the info, Rick

Oh no, I know you're not knocking my system. It probably is partly this Dell. They use a crappy HSF on here that's ducted to an exhaust fan. Sometimes I can see the speed throtling kick in on Sandra. I'm considering getting some better cooling. Also... this is a Willamette processor, I'm sure the similarly clocked Northwood's would do a lot better. I'll be honest, the Willamettes outright SUCK. My P3 outbenches it. It's a great system, probably one of the most stable I've ever used, but if you looked at those benchies, you'd never know it was operating at 1800MHz.

yeah, in non memory bandwith determined benchies your Celeron would whoop a P4 1.9, but in the real world RDRAM is far superior to anything that can be used with the Celeron so in games with the same video card id say the jazztrumpet would whoop you but in say folding or seti you would crush his P4......
Celeron, since it is overclocked on benchmarks and it'll slightly beat it in Seti or Folding times. If the P4 was oced and it overclocked the memory it would really tear apart some Seti times though.
Hard comparison but I'd take the Tualatin over the Willamette any day.

Good point--- hahaha!! Eat my bandwidth!!!
Sorry man, just had to throw this in there... if you'll notice, this thing doesn't even match up to the example that SiSoft gives me of RAM on the same settings...
Yup, RDRAM and DDR have some serious bandwidth. Whoa nVidia nForce memory looks terrible :D

Yep, your memory marks blow me completely out of the water, almost 6 times mine. Let me ask something about that. You say you own a P3 and a P4 system, does the extra memory bandwidth on the P4 make it seem a lot faster and smoother? I know I do all I can to tweak my memory bandwidth, because it seems to give more of a boost than a couple of hundred mhz of processing power. Just wondered if the same principles applied with the RDRam. Most P4 owners rave about their systems, so they must be pretty doggoned nice, irregardless of any deficits in benchmarks. To me, most benchs are simply something to look at and compare than something that I find useful in the real world. I've seen systems that benched exceptionally well that I couldn't use because of stability problems more than likely caused by pushing them too far, however I've also used systems that didn't bench quite up to par that were extremely smooth and stable, so benches don't always tell the whole tale. I'd sure love to see my system perform with memory bandwidth similar to yours, I bet it would be a screamer.:)

well lets put it this way....if you have a P4 1.3 and an Athlon XP 1900+ both with Geforce3s you arent goign to notice the difference i games....sure in benchies the P4 might get crushed, but its still a blazing chip.....i wouldnt mind having a Williamette:D .....the only advantage is in Seti or Folding TImes or if you do Vdeo editing.....

I like the way my P3-s's CPU bench beats the P4 at
default speed ! :D

I like the way my RAM bandwidth beats the P3-s. Eat my Samsung!
EDIT: Just kidding... I'm kinda jealous of all you Tualatin P3 users who's P3's are essencially faster than my P4. Taince brings up a good point in the next post about the "fully matured P4", and he's right, this isn't the fully matured P4. My Willamette ain't even close. The Northwood's a step in the right direction (and I do intend to get my hands on one of them when I get the $$$), but it'll take more. I like AMD too, but I just like Intel more.

uh..i would like to get my hands on a P4, but me too poor to have them.....got to save some money, besides that, we are not seeing the fully matured P4 yet, so just wait a bit longer...and until then..eat my Intel you AMD "ChEaP @sses"..:D
P.s, i like amd a lot, just don't like those amd freaks' attitude:rolleyes:
Jazz, though it's funny that w/ new Sandra buffered Stream your mem score int 2422 is ONLY 2,57 times better than mine 974 (tualcele 1604, pc133, cl3) Ok, it's much :) But not so huge as w/ old Sandra.

Just as more hurtz doesn't mean the chip is more powerful higher bandwith doesn't always mean the platform is more powerful also. Many of the PIII-s chips are out performing even AMD XP/DDR platforms in clock for clock comparisons. Same with the PIV, sorry to burst yer bubbles!

Somebody needs to make us an adapter card to run
that RDRAM on the 815ep boards.
:p
Nice memory scores with that p4....
I like my mem scores better :)
