My boy is considering getting a Dell Studio XPS 435 computer (i7-based) and replacing the ATI GPU with an 8800GTX (which I have sitting on a shelf...). The XPS has a 475W PSU. The GTX has two 6-pin molex connectors that need 12v. The Dell salesman says there are not 2 molex 12v connectors to power the GTX, so he thinks it won't work. I suspect he just wants to sell an unnecessary GPU upgrade.
The supplied GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 3650 256MB. I can't tell if this has a separate 12v supply. If it does, I think I should be able to at worst, get a splitter to fill both power connectors on the GTX.
What do you guru's think?

I say take the 3650 and the dell psu out, sell them both and use the profits to buy a nice single rail corsair psu. I recommend the 650tx or the 620hx, modular or not, you choose.

I don't think the HX620W is a single rail PSU, and who cares if it is anyway?
To the OP, those systems you linked are all overpriced, unless he really wants a Dell for some reason. Has he considered rolling his own?

I agree with the above statement, I just figured that he already bought the dell. If he hasn't then I highly suggest staying FAR, FAR away from Oem builds. As for the single rail or not, I personally like to run a single with a huge amperage, but I have heard that the dual, quad and up rail psu's are fine. I just like to know it is all on one rail.

I have a XPS 420 with a 8800GT 512 and a 325Watt PS....along with 2 DVD drives and 4 Hard drives....XFI sound card...and NIC card.....
Your 425 Watt PS will run it no problem.....Dell PS's are way under rated!

Thanks, Guys. Of course I would love to build it if he lived here. Yes the Corsair is what I would use for a PSU.
I had priced out the components and right now, NewEgg prices are only about $20 cheaper than the Dell XPS ($1100). So Dell must be getting a hell of a deal from Intel on i7 cpus.
But my only question is: do you think there is at least one 6-pin 12v molex on that 475W PSU?
The Corsair HX620 is a single rail PSU. Although it claims to have three seperate rails.

A lot of them are built by Delta, so no gimmicks either. :)
