I'm gonna start off by apologizing for the horrendous pics...I've gotta get a digital camera...lol

I've been attacking the 4Q full tower case again....:p

After a couple of hours with an air powered nibbler, and die grinders, and files, and sweat, and....

(I'll delete this when it drops off the page, BTW, and plan to post the finished job in Alternative Modding)

Hmm...wonder who's logo that is???? ;)

Mr B

I've been torn between black lighting, and green neon....so i dug out my wife's little tabletop black light lamp (a souvineir from her partying days...lol), and put it in the case...

I think I'm gonna go with black lighting now....looks pretty darn good to me....:p

Cheers!

Nice mod, I was thinking more along the lines of printing out the same logo and making it a cut-out, then either painting it on my case or use some kind of mirror tint or color-changing paint.

Yeah...but as I mentioned, I'm deleting this, as soon as it drops from sight...lol.

I'm hoping to get it painted this week, and will post the finished job in Alt. Modding when done.

Looks good Mr.B,I once had a 4Q also that I modded the crap out of.

Mr B
01-20-02, 08:50 PM
It's a great case for modding...the metal's thin enough to cut easily, and thick enought to still be sturdy.

Last one, before I paint....promise!

Much closer, and clearer....:D

**Actually...I'll move it now...I've got a question or two....;) **

Mr B
01-20-02, 08:58 PM
So, first question....

Could someone hook me up with some links for lighting?? I'm gonna go with the black lights....the wife came in the 'puter room, and she actually liked it!

(if she likes it, it must look good...lol. she hates 'puters, now that I spend so much time on it...lol)

2nd Q:

How much lighting is "usually" required, for a full tower case like this? One light, top and bottom? Two in each half?? More?

TIA!!

Mr B

lights ya want B, wellz here ya go: http://www.pcmods.com/department.asp?DepID=6
http://www.caseetc.com/cgi-bin/caseetc/scan/sf=display/se=yes/se=Lighting/sf=category/ml=15/tf=sku.html?id=WhU6MTQL

As for the amount needed... i guess that depends on how bright you want the light to be. I think one at the buttom and one top may do if its bright enough.. :D

goto car shops for lighting.
they got all sorts of cool 12V lights....
you could have beet detection (games, mp3's ect)

you could also get some custom stickers for your case, if that is somethign you wanted

don't buy them from a car shop unless you are sure you are getting a better deal than online. my suggestion would be to get some CC tubes from BGMicro (http://www.bgmicro.com/) look under lights and don't forget to get a 12v in power supply for them
they are very cheap price wise there. don't come with acrylic protection though

*Cough* Mr.B's *Cough* a *Cough* Mechanic *Cough*...
I'm sure you have a bunch of supply shops that you know of that will supply you with automitive decorative lighting. If not, it shouldn't be too hard for you to find a local shop that sells the stuff. The big thing (in my books anyways) is having it lit up, but so as you don't see the actual tube/ bulb itself. Might reqire a bit more modding to get the effect, but it'll look much better, garanteed. You'll get that "glow" effect rather, than the "lit-up" effect. Then again, just my $0.02...

I've got one of the guy's at work lined up to handle the painting chores...I've decided on this...

main chassis/interior side of side panels/drive face plates/case feet/ power button will all be painted green...a very close proximity to 1970 Dodge green...that funky almost neon green that their hot rod cars got painted that year...

The outside of the side panels/top panel/unused drivebay faceplates/front cover will be painted black.

Gonna go with cold cathode, neon green for lighting. Now I just need to find a supplier for the lights...they have to be under 13" maximum, (12" is better), and somewhat on the small diameter side (half inch wide, if possible, max.)

One of those links above I think is exactly what I need, but I haven't gone back to look yet (busy with PM's (re: Classifieds))....

That's the direction I'm headed....neon green and black paint, with neon green cold cathode lighting...:D

Oughtta look pretty sharp, IMHO....;)

www.pcmods.com is great for all your lighting/windowing/anthing else you wanna do needs. My cold cath came from there (but I got it 3rd hand from another place) and its a great product.

The case looks excelent, I can't wait to see it done. I think I've seen the green you're talking about on a Dodge Challenger before . . .

One question for you: There's a mullet under that cap, isn't there? :D

Mr B
01-26-02, 11:41 PM
1970 Challenger SE....this green....:D

Mullet?? Um..I don't think so....:p

(BTW....he started painting today...YAY! Got all of the green shot, and started the black...I can't wait either..It looks awesome! )

I've been watching his auctions with a bit more than passing interest...all he's had at e-BAY, are the blue ones...never any other color...

I'm gonna send the guy an e-mail, and see if he'll do two of the greens for $50 (they're listed at $27.95, dutch at e-BAY).

If so...I think I've found my lights....;)

BTW...I took a couple more pics, but in the process of moving into the new case, needed to format...I saved them to CDRW, but don't feel like loading the cd right now... I'll post a couple of pics in the near future...:)

LOL...stealing my idea, eh?? :D

I just right clicked the logo on the top of the Forums main page, and saved it to my desktop. I was attempting to print out bumper-sticker sized versions on magnetic sheets one night, and forgot to resize...DOH! I printed a sheet with three of this size square in the center of the sheet.... It's held onto the drive bay cover with a light adhesive (not the magnet).

Well, found a use for one...:D I'm sure the other two will find homes...probably put one on the 2nd rig too...

I also found a new home for this little guy...he used to live on top of my monitor...now he's surfin my HDD...:D

I've ordered a dual light kit from this guy.

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2001270234

The dual kit has two lights running off of one switch/relay/fuse, and is a bit cheaper than two individual kits.

$49 shipped for the whole kit-and-kaboodle. :D Just got back from the P.O., from sending payment. With a bit of luck, I'll be posting pics of this case lit up next weekend...

Mr B

Thanks for the kind words all...;)

I'm expecting to see those lights about this time next week (Fri/Sat, Feb 15th/16th). I've got a roll of 400 speed 24 exp. in the 35mm camera...I've shot half the roll already, will shoot the balance when the lights are in.

Some shots are kinda "duplicates"...a couple of them are basically the same shot, one holding the camera --- this way, and one holding the camera I this way.

I'm going to kill this thread when I go to post the good pics, so I don't kill the servers with a zillon jpegs...;)

I'm having some minor issues w/ the tower...I don't know if it's mobo related (runs fine at default, but as soon as I bump it up to my former usual settings, I start gettting errors, lockups and BSOD's. The Shuttle has a rep for funky voltages, I'm using an "AMD ready" 300W PSU though.... ) or heat related.

I'm looking into more effective methods of case cooling right now.... Might have to pull the window, and cut a hole for a fan blowing in on the HSF/cpu. I have one on the mid-tower the XP came out of...maybe that is the difference....

Anywho...thanks for the kind words all...This is how I know I'm on the "right track" putting this beast together.... ;)

*edit* Got my problem resolved...had something to do w/ the HSF...either not enough/too much/or smeared thermal compound...(or the HSF wasn't perfectly flush on the die).

I just got a 1.0 T-Bird in, and pulled the XP out to test the 1.0 (it hit 1575!!! w00t!), and when I put the XP back in, it booted into Windows at 1702 perfectly, with the temps right where they used to be in the mid tower case...:)

Very nice indeed Mr B. The guy sold you green lights? How much? for how many? How many are actually inside the case?

The reason Im asking is that Im in the process of doing the same thing, but its just taking me much much much much longer than I had hoped.

My insides are orange with an external of black. I think once I get all the right stuff together, its gonna look toot schweet... Hopefull as good as yours :D

I got the light kit from the guy that sells them thru e-BAY...his e-BAY ad URL is posted above...by now, they're out of date, but ther'll be a link at the top of the ad, taking you to the current one.

He only sells the blue lights thru e-BAY, but has several colors to choose from. One kit thru e-BAY, is $26.95, + $4 shipping. The shipping is a flat charge, regardless of how many lights are ordered.

I got a dual kit, using two green CC lights. They are wired into seperate inverters, then into one fuse (rated higher than a single kit), and one switch. Wiring it this way, cuts the cost down slightly. I paid $45, +$4 shipping, for the kit I bought. It's a really high quality setup, the lights are quite bright, the wiring is well done, shrinkwrapped and insulated where necessary, and the switch mounts in a 1/4" inch hole (I've yet to permanantly mount the switch, but I'm leaning towards the back of the case, so not to clutter up the front cover...)

I took a whole bunch of 35mm pics when I got the light kit, and plan on taking some more today. I intend on writing an article for the front page, as the guy made the tranasction a pleasure...fast e-mail replies to questions, faster shipping, great prices, even better quality for the components. And the kit was a breeze to install. Mount the components, plug the wires in, and turn them on. :D

I've finished the first roll of 24 exp. film...I'll take that to get it developed today. I'll post some better pics when they're done...;)
