we'd love to help ya out, but there are quite a few different folding clients that you may have downloaded :) You should put the stats of your main rig in your signature then we will steer you in the right direction.

There is an initiation period but I will allow harlam to explain the details.

Welcome to the fold and team 32!

Awesome glad to see someone filling in for me. :)

Yes definitely post your rig specs these guys can help you out a lot.

Your initiation is to say an oath to never stop folding no matter how addicted you get and how many thousands of dollars you spend on the hardware to feed said addiction.

Fold on brother

Edit: or sister

ooops sorry i don't usually have a sig in forums that i frequent, but just put a sig for you guys. I downloaded the GPU client for windows. Also i got a question, why does folding crash when I idle my pc? Whenever I idle my pc and the screen saver comes on I come back to find out that folding@home crashes.

K just got the error message again it seems my display driver crashes and this causes folding to stop and start over as well. Im using AMD's 9.2 driver

Wait a sec, what happened to the $50 to each member and the lashes with the wet noodles?!? And how about the jumping down stairs with a raw egg in your mouth? What is this team coming too?? :)

Welcome to folding Chinky714! -- I don't know AMD stuff, but someone will I'm sure - hang in there the initial setup can sometimes be a bit annoying.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Been here at OC forums for quite a long time. Since 2005. Been on and off, and haven't really had time but I'm gonna be here for a while that's for sure. I leave my PC idle all the time so I figured I should join folding@home and help figure out some new cures. I downloaded the GPU client but it seems I'm having issues with my ATI display drivers. Using 9.2 and it seems to crash whenever my PC idles. I also got a couple other rigs that will join the team once I can set my PC up. The other PCs I own is an E8400 with 8800GT 256MB that will also be GPU folding for team 32. I also got a PS3, and an XBOX 360 that I can set up for GPU folding as well. :)

Also, with that q6600, I'd recommend reading the notfreds vm setup guide, it's painless, fast, and will generate good ppd for you as well.

Take your screensaver and disable it, set the computer to power the monitor off after 10 minutes of idle.

The resolution change from your desktop resolution, to your screensaver, and back again, is what I believe is the root cause. I have the same issue when I use a screensaver

ahh that did the trick thanks! now i don't have to restart folding@home what would I need vm setup for? :P

You're doing the GPU folding on your ATI, but the smp can be a pain in windows, vm setup is much more painless, plus gives better ppd anyway.

dang update. no the screen saver disabling didn't do the trick after the 2nd idling it caused a crash in folding@home stating that display driver was an issue again. Do you think this is because of windows?

the error is specifically the atikmdag crashing.

not sure. I abandoned ati, went to my current card, and never looked back.

For ATI GPU folding, Windows is still the only option.

do you have speedstep and c1e disabled in bios?

I could imagine a problem if you didn't.. the cpu would go to sleep, while the gpu is still trying to work.

yeah both speedstep and c1e are disabled in bios. :( Seems that this is only beta and is pretty buggy at that. I downclocked my gpu to let see if it was that causing the error. Hopefully that works and I can keep folding. Wished I could afford a GTX 260 hehe how power hungry are those cards? seems like you need two PCIe cables plugged in?

update: for some reason it seems the resolution of the folding@home display changed. This has caused slightly more stability i will let it go idle couple more times just to make sure.

you're using the display? the thing with the spinning protein? if so, that's your problem.. that thing is a resource hog, and will cause errors

oh i x'd out of it, but i open it up once in a while to check status. I do realize that it does use up resource, hehe when i open it up I notice the Iter/sec drops from like 500 all the way down to 130 :P How good is the 8800GTS 512MB? I see a couple going for really cheap on ebay I might snatch it up.

if it's the g92 version, which i think the 512mb version is, grab them, they're folding monsters. will easily outperform your radeon. Plus will use fewer cpu cycles

MARCI

how much are they going for? There's a 9800gtx+ in the classies for a good price too, and the money is kept withing the OCF community :P

unfortunately it seems that the ATI version of folding@home is really unstable. If i don't have the program sitting in background pc runs fine, games fine as well. With it running in background after a while it causes an error with CCC and crashes. :( I will have to wait until I can get an nvidia card to help the team fold. I might try to just install the display drivers tomorrow without CCC and see if that helps.

On that cpu you need to run the win-smp client for sure until you get a nvidia card and then you can just set affinity's so that the gpu client get's it's own core...

also welcome.

The 8.12 driver is said to be the most stable if you want to give that a try. I've read that they know what the problem is & will have a fix for 9.3 drivers due any day. (Can only hope) Fold on

If you want to monitor the process, I'd recommend using fahmon, or fahspy to do it. They are easy programs to use, and they don't mess up the folding.

All 8800GTS 512MB are G92, and they are definitely Folding Monsters. You will get 4000-6500 PPD (points per day) with them. If you haven't heard yet, the nVidia cards outperform the ATI cards by a LOT.

If you get an nVidia video card, I would recommend the following:

Run the GPU client with driver 180 or higher. It uses less than 1% CPU.
Run 2x (Not-Freds SMP client in VM Player) on your CPU.

All of this combined can give you 8-11k PPD, depending on the WUs.
