View Full Version : Emergency Computer Help! 911! Help!
Okay. Today I lapped my hsf and then I put it into my computer. I went to go eat something and came back. Booted up and after approximately 4 seconds my computer powers down. I look inside and I forgot to hook the hsf to the 3pin slot thingy. I made sure nothing was really hot (nothing was) and flipped the power switch on the back on and off and the reset switch on the surge protector trying to get it on again. Finally it came on but the monitor isin't recognizing the computer powering up. (orange light does not go green when I start).
For the heck of it I open CD drive and it comes out and shoots right back in. Tried again and it stayed out long enough for me to retrieve the CD and then it goes in on its own. What is the matter with it?
Hrm, sounds to me like it can't possibly be good. My guess is something got fried. Try clearing CMOS and turn it back on, see what happens...

more info? Brand mobo, proc, was there an overclock on it? Any beeps?
I myself have stared at the orange light on a few occasions, but clearing cmos has always been enough to save me (actually on my Asus A7V I don't have to clear it myself, anytime it hangs it resets the multiplier and fsb.)
I don't think you fried the proc, although what kind does matter here. My guess is it reached a threshold and shut down before damge could be done... not sure why it won't go back on though.

For your monitor I suggest unpluggin the video card and plugging it back in. If it doesn't work the first time then try a few more times. I highly doubt that it's fried.
Your CD-ROM is perfectly fine. I tries to take the CD tray back in because it wants to see if it can boot from the CD. Don't worry about that at all.
Good luck.
By the way this should be in General Hardware.

No overclocking. I have an AMD 1700+ it and my thinderbird have been subjected to enough heat to shut them down before. They usually come back up. The weird thing it though when I felt the chip and has after it crashed they weren't even warm! Here are more specs
AMD 1700+ with Dragon Orb 1
ECS k7s5a mobo
256 ddr ram
30 gig 5200 rpm HD
52x CD rom
3.5 floppy
Geforce 3 64mb DDR
Daewoo 712d monitor
I think that is it.

Has anyone ever tried looking at my post? I've experienced all of these problems. Give it a try, you won't wreck your computer by trying it.

hopefully you didn't crunch down on the core when you put the HS back on.

Well I think it is the processor. I put in my old AMD Athlon Tbird and it worked. I spent so much time saving for the new CPu and mobo. God! I saved the money to have the new one for one week and boom. It burns out that easily? Ahhhh... I have to save all that again?

well if it was only a week then it shouldn't be too hard to wait another :p j/k. well if you have a t'bird sitting around that should do you till you can get a new one. i doubt you have any warranty on the XP, do you?

I did read DarkArctic's post and yeah, check your VC. First time I took my HSF off I dropped it on my VC and knocked the stupid thing loose, was a little distraught when nothing happened, then saw the exposed goldfingers, realized what had happened.
Not sure on the reliabilty, as it came from Tom's but he wrote an article about the fact that an XP can fry quickly without any cooling, but it seems to me he gave it 5-10 seconds, and that was with nothing, including a sink. Now why anyone would decided to test that is beyond me, but seems to go more towards Tom being a moron than applying to this post.
I am using the Tbird now. I love my tbird to death. It is so dang reliable I hate to replace it... makes a good back-up though.:eh?:
You could RMA it.
Fried processor sucks, if it was bought locally go back there and say this thing died out on me etc. if it was bought online I think you may need to RMA back to AMD saying what happened.
Yodums
Well I checked and I do have a 1 year warranty on it. Thank god.

The K7S5A sucks power... lots. So 300W power supply is the minimum And you need to have a GOOD heatsink/fan with high RPM and the ability to monitor its speed. Definately check the power supply, tho. If you have a 250W, (or, god forbid, less,) then that's your problem.

well if you dealing with AMD cpu's its a good thing to buy a mobo with FOC, Fan Off Control, when the comp posts if it does not detect any RPM's from the cpu fan then it shuts down.
thats what i got on my mobo, but of course i think my Swiftech MC462 A could dissapate a little bit of heat w/o the fan on before frying the cpu

I've seen more than a couple people who've had probs with various MB's because their fan didn't send a signal (or indicate a high enough speed) Happened to me. Changed the fan, and it worked.
