anyone ever try to make a software/hardware combo to control lights/leds/fans/ect. over the serial port. how hard would that be(refering to the hardware end the software is way out of my league right now)

Your idia is really cool. I think that to use hardware would requiere knowing C or ASM languages. And the use of a component called 8255... I don't really know how to gain access to the com ports or any other for that matter, but it can be done, if I only can get the HEX adress for the ports u want to use. PM me if u want for more details

But like I said if we can somehew connect the chip 8255 that I was talking about we could make much more w/ this project, starting w/ connecting up to 24LEDs... :p

i heard of a guy that lives ware i do(never met him) but he has his entire lighting system in his room controlled by his computer
and he runs linux wich would be a better idea than winbloze because its open sorce and easier to write your own drivers and such if you know how to and all....

I'm either going to use a serial port directly or use my lego rcx($150) to do it. I love the lego RCX for digital to analog conversions. It is very hackable and programmable in VB6.
