OK first off this all happened While I was not overclocked...I was doing some photshop editing and got a nice memory dump error..This ussually happens when my FSB is to high (which wasn't the case this time). So I powered down and rebooted when it booted back up it wasn't detecting my HDD. I shut down again, reset CMOS and switched the IDE cable. Now its detecting the drive and I can log on to my win 98 partition but when I try to logon to Win XP I get a error saying that I need to reinstall <windows>\system32\hal.dll . How do I reinstall the system files with out having to wipe everything out?? and why did this happen?? any ideas..

Is your xp installed on FAT32 or NTFS.
If its FAT then You maybe able to extract the file from the XP CD and copy it over the bad one.

If you boot off of the XP cd there is a repair option that will freshen up the windows files. I have used this a few times to fix systems for other people that had data to recover when the drive was formated with NTFS.

I got this same error before and thats exactly what I did .I believe I booted with the XP disk then went through the steps to get to the install and when I got there it gave me an option to repair the OS and it went like a regular install and reinstalled all the system files with out toching any of my data. Is that what you are talking about ? Because I tried it that this time and it couldn't even recognize the partition type (NTFS or FAT) it said I had to reformat first... weird......
