With a 5 year warranty? I think I'm in for one.

Good deal for a retail to get the extra two years on the warranty. Tempting but I better quite spending money for a while before my wife kills me.

Given the track record of this drive, the first paragraph made me lol:
Seagate has a proven track record of consistently delivering reliable products in volume, and the new Barracuda family is no exception.

I was about to purchase this model (OEM) from Newegg w/ 3yr warranty; Instead I picked this up.
I hope it's not DOA and works fine with a firmware update.
1080p content will fill this baby up fast...

That was only the first revision. The newer ones with the updated flash are fine.

Yeayea but you've got to admit that given the clusterfart that was the launch of that drive that sentence is funny.

New firmware did not fix the problem according to Seagate forums reports, the entire 7200.11 line is affected.

DO NOT BUY... I'm working at a company where we support over 300 PC's every day, we have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 FAIL every week!!! We've stopped using them close to a month ago, but the batch we've already got on the floor still fails... Untill they sort out the firmware issues, stay away.
It's sad, as ST0******640NS and AS models were great, until 330AS models started coming in :(....

Can anyone recommend a good Terabyte sized drive? Preferably for less than $150 or so?

I reccomend the Caviar Black 1TB model. I intend to have many, although I only have one right now. It's a beautiful piece of equipment.
Some things shouldn't be tweaked to work and personally I will always look at seagate and remember this scandal.
Worth noting, all my western digitals are heavier than my one seagate. Doesn't matter which type of drive it is... and I know that heavyness often has something to do with product quality. And I know that the seagate drive is also my slowest drive, granted it's a 7200.10.
This way or that, I'm not fond of seagate stuff. Western Digital seems to be the safe bet right now. So I'll stick to using and reccomending it.

Yup. But if $ to value ratio is of concern than the new Hitachi comes into play too: http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=6014197&postcount=86

another recommend for WD caviars. green for storage, black for performance. I have a 1.5tb seagate that's still kicking but I have been sweating this whole time. I have so much on there I DO NOT want to lose. I wish I had just paid $20 more for the WDs when I bought the Seagate. Hopefully it holds up.

Best buy's been having a few sales here and there that touches the western digital hard drives. Considering all things, they're really cheap there. Seeing as how it's the retail package as opposed to the OEM product.
I saved about 40$ buying my stuff at best buy so far.

Otherwise...

While I think this is mean, I can't help but agree. If you care about the data, the only real option is to get rid of the drive or to use it for non-critical functions.

Well, considering I paid less than newegg for a retail box, I say I got a free sata cable that I didn't have to pay igregious shipping on. I'd say that's a hefty positive, wouldn't you? Oh, and I got a sick looking box and some points towards my reward card. Yeah, it all adds up...
And I can return the drive and replace it in an hour flat. :) (well, within the first 30 days, which I DID have to utilize on one of my 3 drives purchased)

 I just bought a OEM one off newegg for $120. I would have spent $5 for 2 extra years and a SATA cable...
The one I bought will be a backup for the one I currently have.

I just bought from ZZF Caviar Black 1TB for $104 and Free shipping.
Might be a good deal if you are looking away from Seagate right now.

I'd call that as hot a deal as the OP since it had free shipping. Maybe make a thread about it!

Done. I was debating making one. It always comes down to me going over to NewEgg to shop and I forget about ZZF. And since I really wanted the Black, but not the price that it always floats at with NewEgg, it seemed right to just shop around a bit. And bam! The price I wanted.

Update: Drive arrived, SMART = Pass, Windows extended test = pass, running Seagate SeaTools DOS extended test....
I have to say it's spin up/down is quieter than my WD 250GB drives.

It has a five year warranty vs the three year warranty for OEM drives. Around the first of the year Seagate dropped the warranty to three years on their OEM drives.

i may have a smaller 7200.11 but i havent had any issues and NOT all of them are affected.
theres a little thing to run the serial number on their site to see if its affected or not and mine was not.
i dont think its a firmware issue i think its a hardware issue, because if it were such a huge issure with the firmware it would be fixed by now.

Click me (http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931&NewLang=en) Its at the bottom of the page.
I'm going to point a friend to this. He was considering picking up a 1TB HD for ~$100 but I think that he'll grab the extra space for the price.

I checked Seagate's site: the drive I ordered from this link was not affected, Seagate support notified me that I have the latest firmware and the drive revision was after the affected line problem.
I ran extended tests in Seagate's Windows and Dos, Windows, and other disk utitilies... they all came up clean.
I'm going to start storing data on it.
Shipping ground was Fedex ground from San Jose, CA.
