Hi new here . Was wondering if anyone else has had this kind of problem . I'm building a duel loop cooling system for my computer . 1 for the cpu and the other for my video cards . I'm at the point where I'm adding the coolant to the system . Filled both resivours(sp) Jumpered the Green wire to the black wire on the main harness and plugged in the power supply. The pumps & fans come on and then I started getting smoke from the power supply. It smelled like burning dust kind of like when your furnace comes on for the first time of the season.
The power supply is a Zalman 850watt unit. What sucks is this is a brand new psu . I had the psu running in the computer before I added the second loop.
Thanks in advance .

I'd say RMA it immediately, I wouldn't suggest messing with your PS because even opening it voids the warranty. But if I were to mess with it, I would try running it outside of the system completely unattached to everything and see if the smell and smoke goes away after a little bit.

Did you unplug the 4 way cpu power connector too?
Hope it was the psu...

What did you jump on the 24pin? number 4 and 6?

Was the power switch turned on on the PSU? Then you plugged it into the wall? That possibly smoked the PSU or you jumpered it wrong somehow. Still smoked it. Replace it please no matter what. Smoke from the PSU is bad.
doesn't matter which pins you jump as long as it's a green and a black, but to me it sounds like a short in something caused a cap to blow, did the jump wire touch anything that coulda shorted it?

Um lets see . RMA is a great idea ,i've had the psu for about a month now . So I'll have to give newegg a call and see what they say.
Yup I had the CPU power disconnected .
Had the Green wire Pin 14 if I remember right and 1 of the black wires next to it jumpered .
I was really surprized when I saw the smoke . I thought I was imagining things at first .
This particular psu doesn't have an ON/OFF switch on the back of it like normal .:bang head Just plug it in and it's game on so to speak .
not sure on who makes the zalman units, but I would suggest getting a different unit, such as a seasonic or corsair, both great units and you shouldn't have anymore of the magical smoke.
