If you're just adapting a hard drive or something, then one of these (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2261655&CAWELAID=107590760) will work fine, or if you need something with a faceplate, you could use one of these (http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-3-5-Inch-5-25-Inch-Mounting/dp/B000V6R4PM/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_2).
And yeah, they're fine for long term use, it used to be pretty common back in the '90s when the old AT cases didn't include enough/any 3.5" mounts. Hell, I remember buying retail hard drive kits that came with them in the box.

That kind would work as well, it's the same as the second one I linked, just without the faceplate. Those are actually pretty flimsy compared to the other kind, and can be a bit of a PITA because they never seem to quite line up and fit right.
Either way though, you don't need something really heavy duty, it's only gotta hold a half-pound hard drive, so either one will outlast your computer... most of the ones I have, I salvaged out of machines 10-15 years old.

One of the easiest ways is make yourself one from an old, CD-Rom Drive,
Take the outer cover off mount your HDD to the cover plate and slide into 5.25 Bay,,
costs nothing if you have an Old Rom drive laying around!
