View Full Version : Long SATA cables

Some of you have probably seen the project I'm working on (in my sig and currently on hold). I want to stealth my SATA cables, this proves to be difficult. I am unable to find any SATA cables longer than 1 meter (3ft). I don't understand why they don't make longer (they can can't they? eSATA cables are in excess of 6ft!), my best guess is that no sane person would want them that long.
What would be ideal is if I could just make my own SATA cables, custom making them to the perfect length. BUT, I have not found any information suggesting that i can even do that!
My question for you fellow overclockers is, can you make your own SATA cables? Any information/links will be greatly appreciated and help me get my project finished.
Monoprice has failed me (Why? WHY?!) and Digikey is giving me a headache trying to figure out their search.

Well, You could get in touch with a company that makes anything you want... Long Island based, but I'm sure you can get them shipped...

You reminded me, I'd like to custom make them (myself would be best) so that I can get the exact length with no extra slack.
EDIT: Unless that was a hint I was supposed to catch ;)

The business is located on Long Island, and can make anything you ask... If you're interested I can give you their number...

Still open to other suggestions.

I've had them make many things for me already. Been using them for years...
I had them make a 1' long 44 pin Laptop IDE cable. There is no need for this for anything, but I wanted to test out a hard drive in my HP Thin client, and it worked! It uses 512MB flash with embedded XP... Sorry off topic, but that's what he made for me...

I'll have to check them out and see how much they want for what I'm thinking of.
Again, still looking to make my own if possible :p
Wasnt there an issue with long sata cables not being reliable?

Wasnt there an issue with long sata cables not being reliable?Honestly have no idea. Just trying to figure out how eSATA cables can be 6+ feet while SATA is maxed at 3 feet
From what I can tell, it is exactly the same.
The external cables are shielded, that probably lets them double the length.

I'll stare at it a bit and see if I can come up with any other routing possibilities.
Is it possible to cut the connectors off an esata cable and put regular sata connectors on?

Is it possible to cut the connectors off an esata cable and put regular sata connectors on?It is, but I would need the pins and connectors for the ends :)
That is one of my questions though :p

maybe its up to 300MB/s, the longer the cable the slower the throughput....(Hmmm, I wonder...)

Do you have 2 bad SATA drives around? Use the sata connector on both, and solder them together to make a butt connector so you can use it to extend your cables.
Thid, Performance PC's has the ends for SATA so I am guessing that you can make your own. I ran across them in the DIY section the other night.

May be your only option since there may be guide lines to follow for manufacturing them. Custom is different because you are telling someone to make the x length..
I am an idiot. What I saw is SATA POWER cable ends. Duh

You're probably way beyond this issue by now, but here's a link to everything you need to know about SATA:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA
I have a similar problem. I'm going to cut two ends from an internal SATA cable and extend them with cat 5e cable. I need much longer than the SATA standard (about 12 feet!). Worst case, it doesn't work...

According to the link, 1 meter is the max for SATA, so I wouldn't suggest going much over that. You will have a much higher chance of data loss.
