I have been experiencing some odd system instability issues...mostly with the SATA hard drives flaking out. Now I have run every diagnostic I could find and I am 97% sure that the drives them self are fine. The problem all started after moving my case to replace a bad fan. - at the same time working to overclock my - new to me - Opteron 165.
I know that pushing a over clock to fast (ie jumping right to the desired speed) can mess up a system in a hurry. I was only moving one step up at a time.

I think my problem are related to a lose SATA cable because during a restart my cat jumped down from his high perch causing the floor to shake a bit (top floor of an apartment complex...); the computer then acted like the SATA drives were not even there. I replaced the SATA cables and reinstalled windows... Have not had a problem since.

I have always felt that the SATA cables felt loose when plugged in.

Has any one else dealt with a similar problem? And how you resolved the issue.

There are SATA cables that come with a metal rentention clip on both ends. I think I got mine w/ my Asus board.
They are definitely tighter than a regular clip.
You can probably "google" them. I believe I saw them in a site somewhere so you can buy them seperate.
Good Luck!

I've had lots of problems with loose SATA cables.

I now put a dab of silicone on them (careful not to get it on the actual connectors) which does an excellent job of securing them. You can still get them off without too much trouble if you have to.

I haven't had loose SATA cables, but I did purchase some of the perviously mentioned cables with the metal clips, work great. bought them from ebay for a couple $s.

I will have to find some cables with the retention clips... and if they are too expencive I do have Silicone.

Thanks for the advice.
