not sure if this is the right place to put this: im asking about win2k but its mainly a general overclocking question.

backgroud: i got a cmedia 5.1 sound card. before installing i uninstalled the onboard sound and disabled it in the bios. also i thought i would be on the safe side and lower the fsb from 150mhz to 133mhz so the pci would not be overclocked for the install.

Problem: my system has run fine at 150mhz for as long as i have had it. but when i lower the fsb to 133 and boot in to windows, as soon as i try to do anything it locks up. is there something i am forgetting. its been a while since i have tweaked with the bios. i moved down so their sould not be any reason to adjust memory timings right. does windows2000 not like changes in clock speed!?! i never had a problem changing speeds in 98. haven't really done it much in 2k

i can run 3DMark 2001 at 900 (150x6), but when i go into the bios and change to 800 (133x6) it locks up(it wont even get to the opening screen). it will even lock up by just opening the start menu. same thing it i go to 600. both 150 and 133 use 1/4 pci divider. i cant understand why it would do this!

hardware/software questions are not posted in the GD forum.

Have you tried resetting the bios?

Sorry, it wont happen again

do you mean a reset via jumper on mobo or just restoring defaults within bios? ill try resetting defaults in bios and see what happens. all my tweaks back to square one :(

that helped. i reset the bios to the fail-safe defaults and it works now. at least at 600mhz. i still dont understand why LOWERING the fsb would have caused problems. does anyone have any ideas.

btw i havent installed the sound card yet since i couldnt get my system to work at normal pci speeds.

thanks for the tip shadow

Might want to start pulling cards to see which is the one causing the problem. Also, check to see what your PCI divider is set at.

well like was said lowering the fsb could lower the pci/agp, and what i was thinking is maybe you lowering the fsb and having to much voltage might be it?

I never changed the voltage. it runs stock up to 900

possible the memory is getting tired? I've got memory that ran perfectly at CAS 222 for months@150 fsb, but now runs at 322 at 150.
