They exploit gamers/kids/aliens by building pretty-looking systems that cost 50% more than they should. But I could be wrong, as I have never owned one or known anyone who does/did.

i would have to totally agree.. but isn't that true for practically all manufactured computers. :D

they cost so much cause a lot of them have dual athlons (not cheap) and 10,000 rpm hard drives. not saying that warrants buying one but if its $3500 its fairly reasonable (yet still stupid).

My alienware cost me 3600 $ exactly 1 year ago last week, tyoday It consitst of the information below "except the video card it came with was a GeForce 2 Ultra, and a standard Intel 815 Mobo. Then like a fool I boutght my monitor from them as well, which cost me another 800 $. I have looked around the internet "specifically Monsterboxpc.com "they have hands down the berst deals for the most top rate Computers I have ever seen with unbelievable tech support. I could have built the same system with them for 1700 $ LESS !!!!!!!! 6 MONTHS AGO, now I know preices go down quickly once components aren't as new as the were before, but 1700 $ worth in 6 months ! Crazy. . The only thing alienware can write off as being their reason for charging so much extra is that they will tweak your computer with the specific installed components to the max, and include a recovery disk with EXE files on them that will restore these tweaked settings should you need to format. I admit it does run noticeably smoother after reinstalling the custom drivers, but not 1700 $ better, and in due time, it's nothing I couldn't have tweaked to that level myself. Been trying to get ahold of the damn Tech support folx all day over there, and they're just sending me in circles. I have no dependable OC

That's why building your own computer is usually if not always better. The only thing you may want a retail computer is for tech support. Even if you don't, you can always come here :). May you learn from your mistake in the future
