ok my last thread was deleted maybe because of my links?...

Don't worry, the previous these didn't get deleted because of you.
It got deleted because there was too much talking about a specific subject. I was afraid that would happen, and I tried to warn about it too, but then again, I *may* have said a bit too much myself.
Maybe if later on, steam puts up a really good deal on the game like they tend to do with other games, I may pick it up.

For the ppls who have played the demo/game, when you had the voice in english did they speak in english (audio) all the time? because in the demo when i talk to folks in town or even some of the main characters, only the subtitle comes out, no voice. However occasionally i do hear them speak, ie in battles. Is that really how the game is or is it my soundcard? i have integrated btw and it's like that both when i enable software and hardware sound control...

No, It can and has been mentioned before, But seeing as how the last thread got closed because of it, I'd prefer us not even mentioning it in this thread, so this thread doesn't get deleted.
Plus, It's also off topic. It has nothing to do with Last Remnant or other JRPG's being officially ported to the PC.
Also, BackBreaker, You aren't allowed to have external links in your signature. The only links you can have is links within the OCF. ( aka: Linking to a specific thread ), But having any external link by non-moderators is against the rules. Youtube is an external website, thus not allowed.
Not being mean, or anything. Just letting you know the rules, and giving you time to edit your signature so a mod doesn't TELL you to remove it.

If you played the demo, did you figure out how to get a 360 controller to work with it? It only lets me use the keyboard, not my controller.

it picked up my logitech slipstream as an xb360 controller and it worked right off the bat. Its an XInput controller and maps identically to the xb360 controller. All of my icons on screen matched the xb360 controller as well. In the controls menu you can configure everything. If the game picks your controller up you'll see it there.
Also.. my curiousity is getting the better of me, could somebody send me a PM about why the last thread was deleted?

All the icons on the screen match my 360 controller, and I can go to the page that will allow me to configure the controls, but it won't recognize any input from the controller. I just played another game with it, so I know the controller is fine.
ok thats a little weird. I know that when in the menus you have to use the d-pad, it won't recognize any analog movement there.

I'll grab the demo and try it with my 360 controller. That'd be a dealbreaker for me if it doesn't work with this game, but I really can't see how they wouldn't support it....

The game supports it, as iLoki even said, you can go to the options and change around button configurations. It just doesn't do anything when I actually try to use the controller in the game.
well it recognized mine straight away and is functional ingame... try reinstalling the xbox360 driver, the original one from MS website... They should have support to all well known gamepads esp the 360. I wont play this with a keyboard/mouse as well lol though i managed to get by when i played FFVIII before without gamepad.

OK. First off, it works perfectly with my 360 controller. The graphics are just 'ok.' Pretty please some AA at least? Everything was maxed and it ran just fine on my single GPU system, not a hitch or hiccup anywhere.
Secondly, .. Uhm, I don't think I get it, at least not yet. I'm trying though. I think they probably should have included some kind of documentation or tutorial. Maybe there is one, and I just didn't find it yet. It seems fun but I really don't know what the hell is going on half the time. The main character likes to yell 'LETS KICK SOME A!!!' while running into a (brief) loading screen before a fight. Otherwise, it seems like they had the idea to take a bunch of characters yanked from FF12 and make some kind of weird strategy hybrid out of it. I'll probably plunk down the $40 to preorder this one, if only for the weird factor and to support their PC porting efforts.

Grab Nhancer. And set it to force AA on the game. Also remember, This is a demo. So maybe AA will be in the full version.
And I'm not sure what your confused on. The battles confusing? Or are you confused by the story?
Seeing as I own the game on the 360, I can probably answer many questions about the game.

They just kinda threw me into the mix without explaining how the whole mess worked. I just walked around hitting R2 to 'taunt' enemies into fighting me and selected 'physical attack' or whatever for the first mission. It worked. For the second mission, something about a giant attacking some ruins, I found some guy on a ladder telling me I had to go up and through a passage, then some big dude walking down the hallway jumped me, and killed both of my groups in one hit each.
It seems like a fairly deep and involved game, but it could REALLY use at least a basic tutorial :)

My old Logitech Rumblepad 2 works perfect. The demo is reasonably long (for a demo) if you spend the time to check side missions/buy and make better equips/other stuff, instead of rushing the main story. It actually took longer to get through than most full SP games last for me with their generic linear 5 hour story.
Still couldn't kill all the rare spawns, the Caligula (giant walking down the main hallway in the castle ruins) kept killing one of my groups in one turn with Hammerspin III, I was around battle rank 15-17 or so. Tried to level some more on the other monsters around but then he disappeared.
I don't notice a need for AA in this or any other UE3 title, but my monitor has a small pixel pitch running 1680x1050 at 20" so any jaggies in games are less noticeable, that's why I chose it. The full game is very big with tons of content and probably worth buying, as long as there's no game breaking bugs (no bugs at all for me in the demo). It's about the only single player game on PC that I would play for more than a few days.
Having not played the full game yet, i actually liked the way they handled the demo since it just gave us a taste without giving anything away (in terms of story anyway). I kinda got the hang of battles, pretty hard without a proper tutorial especially when it comes to strategy. I usually just do combat/mystic art then attack when i run out of SPs.lol
I searched gamefaqs for some weapon making guide, and i was like, holy crap!lol there's no way i'll get a hold of all that.

Wonder if Mass Effect PC uses that engine. That's another one where the lack of AA was really annoying..
Yes, Mass Effect (for all platforms) was UE3 engine.

Forgot to give an important reminder; DO NOT trust the reviews on this game. There are some really biased, *insert massive amounts of cursing*, idiots down-rating this game who have no idea what they're talking about. IGN for example gives it a 6.8. Total BS. I'm going to individually comment on some of the score categories:
"Presentation - 5.5
A weak, disjointed storyline, forgettable and dislikable characters, and a near total lack of personality. The menus do their job but could have used some tweaking for the PC platform."
^ Utter B. S. It has a decent story/setting/characters, similar to older Square RPG's, but the world map is more FFT-style and there's not as many cutscenes as most FF games. And guess what... Far Cry 2 got an 8.5 in this category. Since it has such a massive and awesome story afterall, LOL!!!! Wha... seriously? LOL. Thanks IGN.
" Graphics - 6.5
You won't find anything breathtaking here and quite a few of the dungeons have a bland, boring appearance. Some nicer areas and armor designs keep things interesting."
^ Happy New Century, we are running on the UE3 engine... hello? Never heard of it? What the hell are you playing this game through, a 320x240 cellphone camera while on the other side of the world or something? Wow... wow. I don't even need to state the obvious here. This guy is a blind moron.
" Sound - 6.0
Poor character voice acting is offset somewhat by some decent tunes for exploration and battle. Generally strong sound effects."
^ Cool, got music turned off too? Or maybe forgot that hearing aid in the car? On a serious note, the music is at least of 9.0 quality (mostly similar to square's FF7/8/9/10 titles), and in some battles it gets absolutely crazy good (10.0) with the symphonic metal and all, sounding like it's something out of Sonata Arctica or Nightwish. The voices are ok, not terrible but not great. Also guess what, you got the option to use the original japanese voices if the english ones are so annoying. Dummy.
Then he complains about the 'transparency' in the gameplay, which is apparently the 'random mechanics' like activation of remnant powers and interruptions of groups in combat. Those have been explained many times before, and are even shown as tips on the loading screens; higher morale and/or low HP/getting hit hard from a tough enemy affect the remnant powers to activate quicker, interruptions are based on how your groups are located by the enemy groups, etc. And I could go on.
My god... IGN... please get some reviewers who know WTH is going on for once. And make sure they aren't blind or deaf.

I played the game and hated it. Reviews are opinions anyway, you can't expect everyone to have the same opinion. And I hate the Unreal 3 engine, and its blurry no AA graphics, so I agree with a 6.5 in graphics.

I Agee with dontknow for the most part. The game looks really good in my opinion, and unlike you, I don't believe that the lack of AA should drop a game's score by 3.5. Seriously, is AA worth 35% of a games score in graphics. I don't think the game deserves a 10, but in my opinion a 8.5 would be pretty fair.
Also, I don't think don'tknows post is very fanboyish either. It just sounds like he wishes reviewers would be more consistant with their reviews and scores.
But, I don't agree with dontknow about the music. At least, I don't find it as good as he makes it appear to be. The music isn't bad in the least bit, but it isn't very memorable either. And I don't find it anywhere near nobou eumatsu's quality either.
But all of this is just my personal opinion of the game.
Honestly when i was installing the demo, i was expecting something like DMC4 graphics at least. But overall i find it good enough. What I do like is the artwork done and looking at those floating remnants...nice.:) As for AA, well Dead Space has no AA as well even if you do 'enable' it. Only the characters have a little AA. But despite that I still find it enjoyable and didn't hinder me from being engrossed in the game. Game reviews gave dead space a decent graphics score btw despite not having FSAA. (i tried to force it through CCC too, but no effect whatsoever)
The story is, yeah, a little 'generic'. But its a tried and proven formula. I mean it is hard to make a very original storyline nowadays. I just hope the ending won't be as disappointing and anti-climatic as FO3...
This game ain't the greatest but I find it very good, at least good enough not to get below 7/10. I think part of the reason why some game reviewers gave it low marks is because maybe they were annoyed by the game performance in the 360 and ended up writing a biased review... Gametrailers gave it 8/10 though and i think that is the score it really deserves.
Part of my reason why I will buy and support this game however is so, hopefully, square-enix will consider a PC release when they make their next FF or even FFXIII. If this game don't sell in the PC, well, this may indeed be The Last :)

The blurriness is annoying yes, and I turn it off in UT3 (where it's most obvious)... feature is called Depth of Field and can be disabled in the UTEngine.ini of any UE3 game. Overall the UE3 engine performs very well and is unmatched in visuals except for a few others, like the CryEngine2 obviously. The DMC4 engine (MT Framework) is comparable too, but DMC4 itself looks better than TLR because TLR isn't fully utilizing the visuals of UE3, since the game was heavily optimized for Xbox360 (and it still ran like crap)... they did upgrade the visuals on PC but it could have been upped even higher.
My rant about the stupid review was actually a big understatement. I really can't express in words how idiotic those popular review sites are becoming with their terrible reviews. But if you don't like rpg's then very obviously you won't like this game. As for the reviewer, they should have someone who actually likes RPG's to review it, otherwise it just gives a bad impression to people who haven't played the game and are looking to buy it based on reviews. And part of the reason crappy games sell/some decent games don't sell as well as they should, is because of these stupid morons giving unjustified reviews (either too low or too high).
The reviews nowadays have just become an ass-kissing game. Whichever company bribes them out the most will get the highest reviews on their game even if it sucks (and it's blatantly obvious which games get overrated). A 'fair review' really is 'too much to ask', unless there is bribing involved. TLR isn't really the 'best game ever' or anything, but it definitely deserves a decent score, I'd say around an 8.0 for the PC version. Gamespot has a much more fair review on it.

Just tried some AA settings with nHancer. In 8xQ and 16xQ MSAA my fps takes a big hit (from 100 down to 30-40 in fights), a little difference in visuals between 0x and 8x, no difference at all when going above 8x. Then at 4x my fps takes almost no hit, with dips down to 60 minimum in fights, looks just slightly better than 0x (have to glue face to monitor to notice much).
On bigger screens I would assume a nicer visual increase with AA since the pixels are obviously larger, especially at 8x and still be playable. It still ran better than the Xbox version even at 16xQ. Just set Shadow detail to Low for Battles, big fps increase.
Edit: Ok yea 4x is becoming more noticeable after playing for a few mins. It's definitely worth it for the small fps loss. 8x and above I can't notice on this monitor. Turned nHancer off and made a profile in the Nvidia Control Panel, AA still works (some people were complaining it wouldn't work through that method).
Noob question, is nHancer a stand-alone software not integrated in Nvidia Control Panel? And if it is, can it work on ati cards?
nhancer is a standalone, I don't believe it will work with ati cards, but i haven't used it in foerever so i could very easily be wrong
Hmm, might try it out, sounds good for forcing AA into games.
don'tknow
03-23-09, 10:52 PM
nHancer only works for Nvidia cards. As far as I know there is no way to turn AA on in certain games with ATI cards, like UE3 engine games and some other games. I see lots of people complaining about that on other forums and haven't found anyone showing a fix. But I haven't tried to aggressively search for an answer since my best card currently is nvidia and I didn't mind not having AA with my older radeon (I always buy these strange monitors with smallest pixel pitch possible cause I'm picky about graphics like that).
Yup just saw it, its nvidia only T_T
Oh wells, i can live without AA :)

Looking at metacritic, there's not a clue to be had among most of the reviewers. Looks to me like the game is a winner, and I'm definitely gonna buy it, and hope Square sees some decent return on their efforts in porting it. Maybe we'll get a PC version of FF13.. Or even 12
i would hope more for a PC version of XIII since its already going multi-platform in the US.

Yes that was announced some time ago. FF13 is being made with a PC engine for Xbox360 and PC, thanks to Microsoft's massive bribing. But the PC version will probably come out a year after the console versions.

I just ROFLMAO'd checking the other reviews... this one site Gamers.net gives it a 71 and says:
"Why does Square Enix port a mediocre game like Last Remnant and not a hit like Final Fantasy?! Why do I need a Gamepad for perfect control?! We recommend Last Remnant only to those select few J-RPG-Fans, who don't own a console… which should probably be about 10 people worldwide."

That must be one of the funniest things I've read in any review.

Partly true...
SquareEnix is making the game on computers for the PS3, and THEN porting it to the Xbox360. ( Subtle Difference. but the game was in development with the PS3 in mind from the beginning, And only later did they add plans to release it on the Xbox360. ) And there has been *NO* confirmation, or statements from SquareEnix that it will be released on the PC. But considering most engines used in the PS3 and 360 are also used on the PC, and since A lot of Xbox360 games get ported to the PC ( since the architecture of the consoles are much closer to the PC than they ever used to be, and since the 360 uses some of the DirectX features and such, porting games to the PC isn't as terribly hard as it once was ), It's reasonable to at least hope that FF13 will be released on the PC at some later date.
Unless there has been some recent announcement about the PC being a platform for FF13 that I'm not aware of, there has yet to be any actual confirmation, but instead is all speculation ( which in my opinion, Is a pretty fair speculation. )
Also, I still believe Square is testing the PC market with The Last Remnant. A way to get an idea of where the PC market is, in terms of JRPG's. And to also get them accustomed to Steam/Online distribution, and get their name out in the PC market early, so if they do release FF13 on PC, more people will be ready for it, and hopefully yields even greater sales.
But that's all speculation on my part. ( but I still think that it's a pretty fair speculation. )

I'm too lazy to find the link. Some site said it would be coming to PC, but there is no official public confirmation by SE. But they could obviously be wrong, as many often are. I wouldn't be surprised if it does come to PC, and also think TLR is going to be one of the factors which might influence that. Really too bad how those lame ass retarded review sites are ruining people's view of the game so they're being deceived that it sucks and it'll get less sales because of that.

I also wouldn't be surprised if it eventually comes out on PC as well. And what you just said about TLR, I agree with. The game isn't nearly as bad as what most reviews give it. Which could hurt sales quite a bit.
And my previous statement about TLR being used as a test subject for Online distribution for PC is why I think this is important. Especially for those PC gamers what LOVE JRPG's. ( Which I am a BIG JRPG fan. ) If this takes off, and square ( along with other developers ) start releasing their JRPG's on the PC...That will instantly kill about 75% of the reason I own consoles to begin with. JRPG's is the MAIN reason why I own consoles now.
And this is the reason why I wished they chose a different game to release on PC ( or another developer released a game of their own ). Simply because the reviews for this tend to suck, And simply put...even though it's a good game, It's not Final Fantasy. It's not the Tales Of series. It's not the Dragon Quest series. And it doesn't have the same production quality of those games either. So getting good sales in the PC sector for this game won't be anywhere near as easy as it would be if they used a game from the Final Fantasy series ( or something equivalent. )
Maybe I'm acting like all this is a bigger deal than it really is. But at least to *ME*, It is a big deal. I'd love to see the day when JRPG's are developed FOR the pc, and not just PORTED to the PC. And if this takes off, eventually, that WILL happen. And it's something the PC gaming market really needs.
Well said. right on
Hmm i don't know but i think maybe sony is bribing those review sites?... hmmm...

Unfortunately, the manual doesn't do much in explaining how things work: BR, chains, etc. There's a Wiki available, plus I've found a lot of information on the Gamespot forums. There's a lot of depth to the game, but you have to dig a bit to find it and get the real value out of the game. Here's the Wiki link:

Nice :) Found some good ones in gamefaqs too but most are still under construction :(
I'm just curious though, how do you guys manage your unions? Do you have like one union developed for mystic arts and others in combat arts, healing, or is it better if you make them all all-rounders? Also what determines the likelihood of your characters using their unique skills, i.e. omnislash, etc. I found that they still sometimes appear even if your union is in full health...

I'm actually enjoying the fact that I don't really know what the hell is going on, at least not yet. I'm HOPING to develop a party of master magicians and using the 'attack using mystic arts' option as much as I can, who knows how that's gonna turn out though. This game is awesome, and for $20 less than the 360 version, how can you go wrong??

Yeah, it does suck. There's a spell called Refresh that can clear those up, though. However, the thing that I don't think was mentioned in the manual, and that I didn't find out until several tens of hours into the game, is that you have to buy the reagents needed to cast your spells. If you have no reagents, then you'll never get the option to heal, revive or de-curse your unions. If you look under your Arts and check out the arts under the Blue and Brown tabs, it tells you what reagents and how much of each is required to cast the spell. The max quantity you can hold of each is 100.
I just got Caedmon, and man is he worth every Gil lol His silence and eclipse skills owns in this early part of the game (only 18hrs in ^^). I think im just gonna go with the flow in my first run of the game. Develop any skills i might get and just survive lol I love the fact that everytime we finish a battle we get a level up. :D

You want to group similar units in your unions:
Combat Arts together
Mystic Arts together
Hybrids together
I believe their arts grow based on how much they use them. I guess you could have a separate healing group but, if they ever get taken out, and no one in your other unions can revive or heal, you're screwed. What I try to do is make sure at least one person in my union can heal. During your battles, you may see an option to "Recover your health", which means the union will standy and, when your other unions have taken their turns fighting, will step in and heal a union needing healing. This is nice for boss battles.
Another few important points:
1) After your battles, when one of your units lays claim to loot, LET THEM HAVE IT. It's how they upgrade their equipment. When they ask you on the World Map if you can go get an item, it's because they need it to upgrade their equipment.
2) On the World Map, when they ask you about learning skills, your answers determine what other arts they'll get into, if they'll focus or if they'll be hybrids. If you want your units to focus in specific areas, make sure you answer accordingly. Case in point, Torgal with ask you about learning Mystic Arts or focusing on Combat Arts. You have to tell him TWICE to focus on Combat Arts for him to switch over to using axes instead of swords. From what I read someplace, down the line, he picks up a nice skill using the axes.
One more important thing:
Enable VSYNC through your video card's control panel to eliminate screen tearing if you're experiencing it.
I was getting HORRIBLE screen tearing (but then again.. its running in the 100's and up)
V-Sync is the way to do it, the built in frame limiter had no effect what so ever on the tearing.

I try and follow most of the stuff ya listed but some people in my unions just don't listen. Loki, for one. I picked him up because he had a great MYS stat, and I always order the union that includes him to use mystic attacks, but he always just uses a physical attack instead of shock. I even disabled his combat-arts type skill in the status screen and it didn't help. Bleh.
As for vsync, meh, get a 120hz LCD and play with the limiter and vsycn off. Other than the lack of AA and texture pop-in, it's amazing looking :santa:
You might have to wait for Loki to develop some skills, also pay attention to how much AP the union has. I have a similar deal going on with my Mystic Arts union, I'll get one or two of them that will actually use arts, but then the others will just physical attack.
That's the thing too, like i want Pagus to mainly develop his mystic skills but everytime I ask for mystic attacks he just uses regular attacks even though he has sparks (David on the other hand does sparks all the time and already has his spark to IV while Pagus is still in spark II and they're in the same union):-/.. I'm beginning to think that the positioning and formation affects how 'obedient' they will be to your commands?...
Anyways, hmm do you guys know how we can get the "borrowed" items back from the other characters?

You guys with Nvidia cards remember that you can use AA. Get nHancer, make a copy of the UT3 profile and change the .exe to point to the TLR.exe. Also uncheck SLI in the profile's settings if you're not using it.
well, if you upgrade to the latest (185.66 beta) drivers, there's a TLR profile already there. I've been using it to force V-Sync and enable AA.
And, game has me completely engrossed... I'm running around doing all of the sidequests before I make any movements ahead in the story.. when I run out of sidequests, I do the next story tidbit, then go back and look for more sidequests >.<

Did you buy the DVD version or get it on Steam? Actually, is the Steam version even out yet? Anyway..
What OS? System specs?
sorry i forgot to add sistem specs
windows vista home premium
AMD athlon 64 x2 dual core processor tk-57 (2 CPUs), ~2,0GHz

and the game is dvd version
edit: i forgot to add that then i tried to play in windowed mode the wondows hung too. i coudnt find any other way but to restart my pc
have you tried re-installing?
How about using steams integrity check, (Right click on the game, properties, and then its something like "Verify Local Game Files")
If there are any problems with the installation itself either of those two methods should help.
Vista buffs the vmem a bit, so you really don't have 1779MB. My guess would put you at 512mb dedicated for your video card, right?
i tried reinstaling, didn't help. and i don't know anything about video card i just wrote down what dxdiag said
are you running the latest drivers/Catalyst software?

This game uses Steam, no need for any kind of nonsense like that.
He is running it on a fairly ancient video card, and one that is well below the minimum specs for this game. That might have something to do with it.

Uhh, go back and read this thread. I'd take these people's opinions over that knucklehead writing for IGN. I think he gave the game a 6.8, which still isn't bad, even though he seemed to have no taste for the genre and probably had no business reviewing this style of work to begin with.

Eh, having DirectX 10 support doesn't automatically make a vid card good. The 2600's are known for not having very good performance (to put it lightly). A 4850/4830 or even 4670 would be a huge performance increase. How old is that card, have you cleaned it recently, and are you turning fan speed up (if there is an option at all, I'm not sure)? Might be overheating if you keep getting freezes. Do other games do this?

So i'm guessing this is a laptop?... Anyways, in the game setting try putting the shadow quality to the lowest, see if that makes any difference.
Also, try left clicking the TLR app in the Binaries folder and have it run in Windows Xp compatibility mode.
I've also noticed that this game stresses the CPU as much as the GPU, uses about 90+% almost all the time. Run a hardware monitoring app for your cpu and gpu to see what temps you are getting while playing. It could be that your hardware is overheating...

So far I think this is a phenomenal game. I do admire the amount of quests that are available. I haven't progressed very far into the storyline (I'm just about to go to the assembly), but I've invested a large amount of time to leveling up my skills, upgrading items, slaying rares, and doing quests.
One thing to note, though, is that if you plan on doing all the quests in between story events, you're going to spend a lot of time in battles. I've actually forgotten bits and pieces of the storyline already due to this (granted, my memory isn't the greatest).
Aside from that, if you're into JRPGs, I'd definitely give this a go. I have to say that I'm absolutely happy with it. It's been a long, long time since there's been a decent RPG (in my opinion) for the PC. While the D&D RPGs are fun, I grew up on Squaresoft/Square/Square-Enix, and I have a hard time enjoying RPGs if they fall too far from the Square tree.

Important question for my enjoyability of this game...
For these multitude of side quests that you speak of, are the environments cool? I played the demo for a bit, did two side quests where I just get teleported to these dungeons. And they would start cool, then just fade into repetitive hallways with the same textures all over and nothing unique about any of the rooms.
As much as I don't like World of Warcraft, at least the dungeons garnered individual attention to make them feel like real places, rather than just a Diablo style giant dungeon filled with useless hallways and rooms that all look the same. It worked with Diablo cause its randomized and action packed, but I worry for a slow paced rpg like this, that I'd get crazy bored real quick if the dungeons don't captivate me.
And Square has certainly not earned the benefit of the doubt on this one....
There are many, many different environments in the game. Honestly each dungeon sets its own kinda feel/look and sticks with it, rather than going overboard with anything. Each environment is different. (the caves tend to look a little bit alike, but they're caves.. doesn't bother me much)
I am enjoying the crap out of this game. The story and gameplay are enough to overcome small design issues with the dungeons.
Jorlain
04-08-09, 12:27 PM
I don't see it as too much different from any other JRPG in the respect of dungeons. Keep in mind, that the repetitive battles can be avoided, as the monsters are visible. You also have an ability to slow down time, to either group a lot of enemies into one battle (harder), make sure you only grab one at a time (easier), or avoid them all together if you can get past them before the timer runs down.
So you do have some ability to control the amount of battles. To add to the environment, as I said, I find it up to par with most JRPGs, and past works from Square-Enix.
Yup, and also the ability to fast forward battles if you just want to grind and level your characters. Then you can also enable manual critical triggers if you want to be on your toes during battles. This game is also one of the most rewarding single player game i've played lately and you always get a level up after battles. I mean i can play one hour of say FO3 or Bioshock but it feels i've accomplished a lot more with one hour of TLR :D
The dungeons can be repetitive but the rare monsters/loots/dug items and learning new skills everytime i get into dungeons is what kept me coming back, not to mention the amount of side quests which drove me to go to those dungeons at the first place. The graphics are gorgeous and the amount of art and detail present puts most PC rpgs to shame. Just look at Caedmon's armor up close for example and you'll see what i mean, or the floating remnants in Celepaleis. The Great Sand Sea actually felt like you're in a huge desert and other places and dungeons are just grand to look at.
This is one of the most underated game ever.

Kind of like the overused main character in Square games from FF7 and on. Sometimes with a different hair color. Looks almost the same in many titles. Not really a game breaker but it's strange how they have near 0 originality when it comes to a main character, but the opposite when it comes to the other characters, monster design etc. (yes I know the base types are used in many FF games).
I think Square said something about treating their FF series as similar worlds like a multiverse, which is why they make them all different instead of 'direct sequels' except for X-2. But then they made Rush from TLR look very similar to Squall and the hume character model in FF11. This overused character model should have a name of its own; 'Generic Square Hero' or something.
ARGH.. the Gates of Hell boss is kicking my ass >.<

this guy is horrible.. the Hypnos are no problem, unless one uses Spinning Lariat on a union thats already been ganged up on.. (read: near death) which then follows with them getting resurrected and forced to attack my other unions, which is a VERY bad thing... as almost all of my unions are capable of easily doing 10 to 15k a turn... Hell, with a lucky critical, David can do upwards of 10k BY HIMSELF.

make sure one person in every union has the ability to cast vitality herb (the one that rezes people) and if any union ever goes down immediately use "bring them back." some times you can rez them before he enthralls. Don't worry about breaking deadlock since the cyclops should be tanking him for you. If he ever enthralls a group immediately select "cure them even if it kills them."
Also what formation are you using? I can't remember the name of the formation I used, but I remember it was one that minimized the effects of his blue angel (the one where he sends little dudes at you from out of his head) and hellfire attacks. I think the stats on it were enhanced mystic defense and mystic evasion.

Honestly, he just sucks! On several forums, people have agreed that this boss is just extremely difficult and, in some cases, unfair. I had tried fighting him before at, I think, BR 26, and got spanked. Then I went off and did some quests and came back to him around BR 51 or 52. He's tough! If you can get your Cyclops to deadlock him and keep your unions far enough back that he can't reach you with his Hellfire attack or those stupid blue babies, you'll be better off. Also, make sure you have ingredients for your Vivification Arts in case he enthralls any of your unions or, heaven forbid, your Cyclops! It takes time and, in some cases, a bit of luck, but he's beatable after a few tries. Some are luckier than others, though. Hope that helps!

I think Vampire is the one you're thinking of.
I've done every single side quest that I've come up upon.. and I made it a point to do every single one, I searched them out in cities.. There might be the Silver Falcons (part two) that I can do.. otherwise I just gotta grind I guess... I need to re-arrange my unions a bit as well. I've done some reading and I've got some ideas on what to try next.
Thanks guys! :D
EDIT*** After a few more tries I finally took him down. I kinda rotated my unions out and got lucky and David got Ex-Machina, which helped immensely. I got really lucky.. the boss took out 2 of my unions and the Cyclops.. >.<

Just finished the Catacombs missions, I tried to go to the Great Sand Sea to fight some monsters and level up a bit before moving on the main story. But I got my ass kicked by those Blackwings in the Sand Sea (I'm at BR27). Does the monster levels with you in this game? Cuz it seems like even the Grand Beettles got harder. I've played this close to 10hrs now, and it feels like I'm not even 1/4 into the story, this game is needlessly long and difficult imo. Another question, how do you keep morale up? Everytime I fight the Blackwings they curse my morale down to almost nothing.
buffheman
05-29-09, 09:51 AM
Only send in 1 union in the first round to keep your whole party from getting cursed. Also, there's a skill that lowers enemy morale... I think it's a Hex, maybe not. You might not be far enough to learn Hexes yet.

@ awdrifter: the monsters do scale with level, but that has a cap and eventually they become easy until you move to another area further in the game. Make sure you have at least a few casters learn Hexes (later on in the game it's nice to have a full union dedicated to hexing) and level those up, you eventually get Dispirit which is very powerful, does high aoe dmg plus lowers enemy morale. After that is bewitch which is an even better version of it, and then there's one more spell.
@ ratbuddy: it's better to use the expensive leaders from guild halls.

I love the challenge. It's easily possible to die in TLR if you fight too many enemies at once, even 'weak' ones. Final Fantasy hasn't offered me that kind of challenge since the first one, and then only if you haven't overleveled at all.

Stopped playing this for a while, was trying to get a 'low BR run' but some of the boss battles are impossible that way. Requires insane luck to get past them. Not really aiming to absolutely max my chars in every way, but I don't want the later chars to have gimped stats once I get them (hate having to make weak chars catch up when I already have high BR).
I heard in the Ancient Ruins or something it's very easy to lvl weak chars but that's some optional content near the end of the game.
