View Full Version : 4870 benchies
I'm doing some test now, everybody was telling me that I would be way better with 1 4870 than my 2 3870 in xfire. Just for the heck of it I'm running just one of my 2 4870 and in 3DMark06 it's not even coming close the my 3870's in xfire. With both little boys I was flirting with 20K in 3DMark06 and with one 4870 I can barely make it to 17K. Isa there any secret I need to know to tune that puppy?

1. 3dmk06 is not a game.
2. Crossfire or SLI does not scale across every game and certainly does not scale anywhere close to 100%.
3. Also, same rig and processor and clockspeeds?
IMHO single card over any SLI/Crossfire solution @ 1920x1200 and down.
17k sounds about right. 17-20k or so is right for the 4870. What clocks are you running on your card?
I was able to get mine up to 790 core, 1100 mem. CCC limits those to the max and I don't know of a 3rd party program that lets me oc it.
3dmark 06 isn't the most accurate benchmark to use iirc.

^^3dmark isn't a game, crossfire and sli don't scale that well in games. The 4870 will beat your crossfire setup in games.

Ati tool, Riva tuner...
riva tuner didn't work actually...don't know what was going on there. I haven't tried ati tool yet, I'm downloading amd gpu clock tool right now.

What CCC let me do is 800/1100 (all max out) the difference is always2 to 3K no matter what how the cpu is oc ( from 3000 to 3800mhz)

I disagree on the resolution. I would recommend single card on anything 1680x1050 and down as I play everything at 1920x1200 and would be upset if I had to turn down AA past 8x in the COD series with quality adaptive AA. I just think 1920x1200 is too demanding while still having quality settings. Maybe I've just had my 4870x2 too long and can't accept less than all maxed out graphic options in games. lol
I know I'm on XP, but I've not yet run into any problems with crossfire with my x2 card and games. Even GTA IV, the atrocity it is/was, did well from day one. Though, as you said, it is IMHO.

Yep, YMMV! :)
The only thing a GTX260 216 of HD4870 1GB couldnt run full tilt is Crysis with at least 4xAA, Warhead, and mabye FC2. A gtx285 would chew those games up with your settings and scale 100% across every game instead of adding 0-80% depending on the title.
I also found at that res I dont need as much AA b/c of the resolution itself. But again IMHO! :)
Can we get back to the original question? I'm not talking about screen res how AA you set your rig ect.... I'm trying to compare apple and apple, same app, different kind of cards, looking for result so I don't want to hear about 3dmark is not a real game, I already know about that:beer: I tried to move the mouse and hit keys on the keyboard and nothing happens (being a smart a$$ here:beer:) I'm just trying to compare 2 different kinds of cards on the SAME app. Did you guys noticed the same kind of performance drop doing the switch?
