Iam currently using my brothers computer, which is connected wirelessly to the main computer. My problem is the main computer's connection isn't working. The LAN wont show in the network connections, its completely blank. I tried installing the ethernet cable and it wont work properly. I also just reinstalled windows and that's when the problem occurred. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Im running windows xp 2000 at the moment. Maybe i need to reinstall my wireless connection. That's Linkys* If i spelled it correctly thanks!

-teh noob.

did you install the drivers for the network card?

As Know Nuttin says, and also make sure the LAN is enabled in the BIOS,

Ditto. I recommended getting the latest drivers from the NIC manufacturer's website, putting it in a USB stick, and installing them on the PC>

Ditto on the BIOS = enable NIC as well

sometimes you need to install "chipset drivers" for the OS to even recognise the components on the board. (evidence of this is that may be not all of the usb ports work, if you go into device manager you might see a few yellow exclamation marks !

if you know the mobo make and model post 'em up.

also, do you know if the network card is "on board" or is it installed to the system via a pci card as an add in?

on board means the network port is soldered to the motherboard and is not removable. if its not on board, then you would need drivers specific to the manufactured network card, and not necesarily the same make as the mobo.

What dell system do you got?

What model, more specifically.

pls dont take it to a shop. not until we have exhausted all possibilities.

as james said, lets start with what dell system you have. also, if you can get internet access from a pc or laptop near you, you can visit dell website and go to their support page. then, somewhere there they will ask you for the tag ID on the side of the pc. its usually black with white writing - once you put this in, it will give you everything specific to your build.

p.s. whats the usb cable for?

There have been few times in the past, where even after a fresh install of OS, something wasnt working properly, and only after a 2nd install, things were working properly again. You might have ran in to same issue as well.

A file wasnt copied properly and or wasnt installed during main install of OS, so now your NIC is not working.

Since its a fresh install, start from scratch again. It will take you 30min to reinstall WinXP.

thats strange. i personally have never encountered this problem. windows xp doesnt come with everything your machine might need though. may be if installing the correct driver from the dell website doesnt fix the issue then this could be done?
