View Full Version : Can I make a Dual Boot if Already running XP
The subject says it all. Already running XP, but not impressed with the level of support that was put into software being able to run on it.
Is it possible to put an older system on in a dual boot config?
If it is and I put say ME on, can I share the same programs that are already loaded or will I have to reload in that environment the s/w I want to use?
Assuming if I put 2000 I wouldn't be able to see the same s/w since its a different file system.
Thanx

i've never had a dual boot with both OS's being windows but i'm GUESSING you can't see files on different partitions, but i don't know. chances are you'll have to put everything in the ME partition that you already have in XP. i recommend 2000 over ME anyday though, so if you can't share the files between XP and ME you should do the smart thing and go with 2000 on your second partition.

You cannot install any OS using "the old kernel" (read: DOS-->WME) after having installed any NT kernel operating systems (read: NT--W2k--XP).
The only way to have a dual boot between 95/98/ME and W2k/XP is to first install 95/98/ME and then W2k/XP.
You can without any problem install W2k after XP and XP after W2k.
See this (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58132) for more info on how to!

You can also get a program called PartionMajic that reparitions your hard drive without destroying any data. Then you can install whatever OS you want onto the new partition. I recommend 2000 because it can read NTFS as well as FAT.
