View Full Version : Resume from hibernate - WHY

I have a computer that resumes from Hibernate mode at 11 PM sharp every night. This is XP Pro. There is nothing in the task scheduler. It is a new XP Pro installation with no additional apps installed except for a virus scanner (it's not the scanner, because I uninstalled it and it still resumed) Why is it doing this?!

If I shut down, it does not start up at 11PM. If hibernate it, it resumes at 11PM. So based on that, it seems like something in Windows. I've changed the clock and retested several times, when it hits 11 PM it resumes from hibernate.

Who can tell me why??

Reading comprehension FTW! ;)

I'd suggest checking the BIOS to make sure wake-on-LAN is turned off, first thing. You can also do that from Device Manager -> [Ethernet adapter] -> Properties -> Power Management tab-> make sure 'Allow this device to wake the computer' is unchecked.

Also wouldn't hurt to go to a command prompt and type (without quotes) "powercfg –devicequery wake_armed" to get a list of all the devices allowed to wake the computer. You'll probably have mouse or keyboard, which is fine, but see if there's anything else.

After that, check your Event Viewer, see if it shows what's happening at 11pm.

My guess would be some program is trying to update at that time.

i ran the powercfg command and the ethernet adapter is enabled for WOL. But that's not the problem.. i use WOL on this computer, but for testing I disabled it and it still wakes up at 11 PM.

I'm sure Windows has some internal / hidden tasks.. Where can I find them, such as what registry keys should I look at?

Not sure, but it may not even be windows itself. Could be some application you have installed that is doing it. Check all apps you have installed that may try to auto update. Things like Adobe and java etc etc.

I haven't used Hibernate since WinME(bizarre problems) but find this topic interesting, never-the-less.

ISP related? Maybe since WOL is enabled, some ISP activity is triggering wakeup?

It's something trying to update. AV, Windows Update, Windows Time, Java, Realplayer, Quicktime, Adobe, Google toolbar, etc. I'm sure there are more programs that auto-check for updates, but that's just what runs off the top of my head. Are there any entries in the event viewer that correspond to same time (specifically program updates)?

Are you sure you're not confusing hibernation with standby?
