Here`s a company who knows a thing or two about getting a big sound out of a tiny box.

none powered - sub & sat system link.

can vouch for the quality of latter combo (needs amp)
carnt help on the products side much (in UK so youll probably find better home brew speakers without the import premium)

Please do not buy a Bose sub or speakers. They tend to use very small drivers (in both there speakers and subs) that are poor at replicating anything but midrange frequencies. There are better options for the money. For an inexpensive sub, you can look at some Dayton subs over at parts-express.com. At $300-$400 I would look at Elemental Designs. Over $400, there are a massive amount of options from brands like Elemental Designs, Hsu, Rhythmik, SVS, AV123, etc. Do you research and check the sub section at avsforum.com to get better feedback.

Ratbuddy, he was trying to be helpful. While I agree with you, there's no need to laugh at him for his opinion. It would have been more helpful to the OP if you suggested subs in his price range.

C'mon, there's no way he was serious.. Crummy little 4x4x2.5" 2 channel speakers for $400?
edit: And I think when he said sub $100 and so on he meant speakers priced under that, not subwoofer.

I highly advocate buying used. When you get bored or want to upgrade, youll atleast make your money back, if not turn a profit. I have about $1000 into my main stereo...if I bought everything new, Id be down about $3000.

This is what I did. I wanted to build a decent budget audio system and was unimpressed with computer setups after my Klipsch 5.1's died for the second time (not sinking your amps is a really terrible idea guys) so I went to Craigslist.
Picked up an Onkyo digital receiver and a pair of Marantz SP1000's and 2 Fisher STV-884's (not great speakers but the 15"s compliment the Marantz set well enough) for a quad stereo setup. Since I'm not really an audiophile it's been perfect for a $300 setup for me.

THANK You for making me laugh. I needed it.
Bose's $3000 system/amp sounds as good as my $300 comp speakers with $120 of cable and $200 soundcard.

I don't know speakers that well, but I read a lot about them about a year ago when I was shopping around, and I kept hearing Audioengine 2 when I was surfing audiophile forums with an offensively low budget.
It's just 2 desktop speakers, no subwoofer (none needed apparently) meant for a smaller room like a bedroom or office. Supposed to be great... there are reviews on cnet and stereophile that are just blown away by the $200 price tag, given the quality. They're on my short list of things to buy.

iirc bose's higher end stuff is actually on par with what else is out there.
i like how everyone instantly hates on bose but everyone loves their z-5500s.
buy used for sure, find out what you want via avsforum and get it on craigslist.
you never mentioned if you wanted to go with a 2 channel or a surround system but I'm imagining surround.

Z-5500s aren't exactly great. BOSE aren't exactly great either. Z-5500s are no mids and distortion galore. BOSE is overpriced, no bass and no treble. Two pretty poor options.

The series I & II 901's, and the 501's and 301's are ok. Not fantastic, and not on par with... well, anything in their same price range, but they're alright speakers if you find a cheap deal on some used ones. But the small Acoustimess and the like aren't worth the plastic and particle board they're made of.
As for the OP, what exactly are you looking for, anyway? Surround sound? Stereo? Home theater, gaming, music, what? Is size a big concern? There are a lot of good options, the best bang-for-buck being a decent receiver and some older used speakers.
My system consists of Paradigm Atoms and some '60s Fisher XP-56's for stereo, and the XP-56's get switched off in favor of a '50s Frazier for center channel duties and Fisher XP-44 surrounds when I go into surround mode. I don't have a sub, but the Frazier goes deep enough to cover such duties. That's probably not particularly useful information to you per se, but my point is that it sounds better than any packaged system, and I spent a total of ~$30 for all those speakers by watching thrift stores and yard sales. If you wanna go that sort of route, check out the Audiokarma.org forums, a bit of reading there and you'll get a feel for what sort of things to watch out for.

i find that the crappier the source, the better bose sounds :screwy:
i have a pair of 201s that hurt my ears when driven by a decent amp, but sound pretty decent with one of those mini system deals, like a panasonic or sony or something.. i think it has to do with their direct reflection gimmicky thingamabob. i did have a pair of roomate 2s that bumped pretty good with a discman

Buy Other Sound Equipment
The 901s are OK, but their lack of imaging and soundstage severely cripples them. Your best bet is to research audio forums, my favorite is Audiokarma...they always know where to find a nice deal on some choice gear...new or used. IMO, your best bets at quality audio gear on the cheap are craigslist, garage sales, church sales, and estate sales. I can guarantee that you could build a nice respectable system for under $100 easily.

for all your audio (and video) need, avsforum is your best friend. just don't be shy away with all those audiophile/highend gearheads there. for used sale, try audiogon.com or videogon.com or craiglist.
This is all you need to know about Bose:
