alright, i was slappin a puter together from pieces i have lying around my room, got everything in and together, perfect, no problems
posts fine, i raise a hand in victory
then before the win98 loading screen comes up i get this error
Floppy Disk(s) Fail (40)
anyone know what the problam could be???
the ide and power cables are fine i already checked them out
is the end with the reversed ide wires supposed to go closest to the floppy or plug into the mobo?????
That is a BIOS message = your fdd aint working.
try reversing the cable, make sure the power lead is secure etc.
Check the BIOS settings

Turning the cable over and/or changing the connection usually works for me. If it stil doesn't work, it's probably dead

Check the BIOS, make sure it is set to 1.44 Floppy (i'm assuming that's what it is).
Also, you have to have the floppy cable correct on both ends, and the floppy must come AFTER the twist in the cable. You can't just flip flop like with HD cables.

alright, i think i have tried every combonation of flipping the cable over ect, with both floppy drives, still not working, could there be a problem with the motherboard?

Possible. I have had times when I was sure that the floppy was dead, and it just took about an hour of screwing with it. Make sure the bios is right.
Also, it could be the cable. try a different one, if you have one.

my immediate guess is that the drive is toast. i threw a fit when i couldn't get mine working right when i built this system.. the "read light" would stay lit constantly. i yanked a floppy from an old gateway that my mom uses, and all was well. it would have been more of a hassle than it was worth to replace the $9 drive, so it's collecting dust.
