View Full Version : Toshiba lappy opinions please.
Fry's has the Toshiba L305-S5939 (Intel Centrino T6400 Processor 4GB RAM 320GB Hard Drive 15.4" Display Windows Vista 64bit Premium) laptop for sale in-store for 579.00 dollars.

It is listed for 679.00 on the web...Trying to find a lappy for a friend...She really only surf's, does word doc's and the scype thing...She does have 125gig's of music she want's to dump on it.
It seems for 579.00 it is a good buy to me...But I am no laptop guy by any means...I talked to the guy at Fry's and he told me it was a very good deal indeed...Said something about the Centrino being very good for battery life...Has 4 gig's of RAM...Camera, mic...yadda, yadda, yadda.
I have always had very good luck recommending Toshiba lappy's as they seem to always have excellent "bang for the buck".
But...I would like to get some feedback from you guys...I have no idea...There could be something out there that will kick this Toshiba in the teeth for the same or less money.
Any suggestions ???
Thanks for any feedback, recommendations or advice !!!!!

It's overpowered if it's just being used as a grandma machine. Check Best Buy's flyer for a $400 laptop that'll work just fine. They usually come with a dual core processor, 2GB RAM and 160GB+ HD.
Centrino just means it uses an Intel chipset, processor, and wireless card. Pure marketing-ese.
My knowledge of laptops is sketchy at best. I do know I bought my daughter one last year, and once we got all of the silly Vista crap straightened out she has really loved it and it has had zero problems. I think Dell is still making laptops with XP, that may be an option to consider as well.
Good luck with whatever you get.

Yeah I was looking at a 349.00 dollar Toshiba they had at Fry's...2gig's of ram, 160gig hard drive...Intel something or another processor.
Talked to her and she said well you can put a larger hard drive in it and add more memory.
The Egg has a 500gig hard drive's for around 100 bucks...Getting it to 4 gig's of memory and the drive would bring it up to around 550 and still no camera or mic.
That seems to be the sticking point with her...Has to have the camera and mic for the scype thing...She uses it at work everyday and drags it back and forth between home and work...She has a camera that was for the Mac that got stolen and really did not like connecting the camera and all that business.
And she has to have the 125 gig's of music on it...So a 320 gig hard drive would seem to be the minimum size drive to go with for her application.
Guess I will look for the cheapest lappy I can find with the camera and mic and go from there.
Thank you for the reply's...Any thoughts on Toshiba lappy's...I like em...But like I said I am no laptop guy.

I'm thinking of getting a Toshiba, this one -> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114613
I'm tired of my cheesy Everex (Via C7 chipset) whose hardware is marginally supported. I want a 'mainstream' laptop that has a fighting chance of working well, either in Windows or Linux. [/end-rant]

Yeah that looks like a good choice also...Stumbling around and found a Dell.

Has a sealed keyboard and it is "purty"...You know how girlie girl's are.
Momma seezzz...."Dont buy no ugly laptop"
I just have never had any luck with Dell lappy's...Have 2 I am working on right now...One is less than a year old Inspirion 1525 that has a 250gig WD hard drive that has left the building and another fairly new Inspirion that will not do anything...Black screen city.
That and a friend of mine who it the IT guy at a finacial company tells me dont do it...They bought 12 high dollar Dell's at the first of the year and 3 were DOA...Told me he had to go through the slow dance with tech-support before getting help...Even had a guy come out and change ever single component on one of them before they would let him RMA it for a new one.

this might be a small suggestion but how about getting your friend a netbook? Some netbooks can be had for $350 and you can replace the hard drive to a larger one so that she can put all her music onto it. They come with webcams as well. Great mobility, extremely good battery life and its "chic" since your friend is a girl. Most netbooks come in pink or many other frilly colors. For web surfing, word documents, and skype, the netbooks are more than adequate.
