View Full Version : refresh rate / fps ?
my brother's new box is havin problems.(amd 1700xp, kg7, pc2400, gf2 64mb)
with a gf2 64mb vid. and at 1024x768 game settings. his fps
are down to 50-70. i get 100-200fps at the same settings
and a gf2 32mb card. he can get those fps with a res of 500x ???.
he also has an old 17" monitor (7yrs old). when the box boots,
the screen jumps all over the place, telling me this thing is not so good.
to sum this up... can a crappy refreshrate lower the fps that much?
thanks

In what game?
If its quake 3, have you edited the q3config file to allow fps above 80 ?

q3 settings : com_maxfps 999
is his card a gf2 mx, mx200, mx400, gts or pro? you don't say which. if it's only an mx, then those frame-rates are fine. the amount of memory is more a gimmick than anything else. 64mb doesn't make a big difference over 32mb with a quick machine, it's the vid chipset that counts.

Actually i think its the weather the memory is DDR or SDR. That is the main factor.

It does have to do with memory type when comparing the same chipset... however a GTS with 32 will kick the **** out of an MX 400 with 64.
yes, refresh rate will decrease performance only when vsync is enabled and based on what you said, about 50-70 fps, it seems that the monitor rr is set to the default 60Hz and the vsync is anbled.
yes it's a "gts"
thanks otto, i'm not sure if his vsync is on or not, it does look that way. i could see any difrence from my setup from his except he's got the 64meg gts, and a crappy monitor.
4x is enabled, 4in1 drivers were set to turbo mode.....
