Cd Burner Overclocking; what is it?
With some burners it is possible to flash a new ROM to achieve a faster
write speed. I first did this with my 4x burner and made it into a 6x.
Exactly how do you chose and flash the correct ROM?
First of all you must locate a ROM for a similar drive that has a
faster write speed. Burners are much like processors in that the rated
speed is not always the highest speed the drive can go. As an example
if you have a Mitsumi Model ### 8x burner you should be able to flash
the ROM from the Mitsumi Model #### 12x assuming the write mechanism is
the same. Sometimes you can simply fash the ROM using the standard
flashing software available from the dive maker. Other times you will
have to hex edit the ROM so that it will flash. What I did with my
mitsumi was hex edit the ROM with Ultra Edit. I had a hunch it was the
checksum because the flash program said what the check sum on each ROM
was so I was in luck. I changed the checksum of the new ROM to the
checksum of the old ROM and it flashed.
So what am I trying to do? I'm trying to help people out with
Overclocking there drives and then add the information to a database
for Overclockers.com. This mod isn't for the faint of hearted. In the
worst case your drive won't even spin up or be recognized by windows.
Most of the time if you flash the incorrect ROM the drive just won't
burn right and you can flash it back to the origional ROM. I'm willing
to risk my 24x sanyo; waht about you? If you want me to give you a hand
tell me the Exact model number and manufacturer. You can find some
additional info at Cdrinfo.com but even they are limited to only a few
drives. I would like to be able have info on the most common drives
today. I would love to see all those 24x drives at 32x. Any help is greatly appreciated!
What the hey, I'm stupid, tell me more! I've got a Panasonic (also known as Matsu****a, Mat****a) CW-7586 it's an 8X4X32 with a 2 meg buffer. The firmware is listed as version 1.08 in the System Properties Device Manager. Any ideas?
***edit: I love the way the profanity checker removes the four letters in the Japanese phoenetic "Romaji" character set! It should say "Matsu s h i ta, Mats h i ta"
Well Eobard I'm working on it. I found out that the Mats h i ta is the same as a Panasonic CW-7586 or a ComProCW - 7586. I'm still looking around so I'll tell you if I find anything.
there is a site that tells a little about stuff like that, let me see if i can dig it up....
found it! right here (http://www.tweakhardware.com/burner/)

Don't give up so soon those lists are hardly comprehensive. Not many drives have been tested so you could be the first.

what about a NEC NR 7700a 12/10/32?
Tbird Man from what I can tell it looks like you may be able to upgrade your drive to a 16x10x40. Here (http://www.daocplace.com/~bender/D2M34202.exe) is the ROM for the 16x. You can try to flash it but remember there is still some risk you will kill it. I would try it since right now burneres are so cheep. A 32x burner is just a little over $100 so why not try.
Tbird man
01-21-02, 07:07 PM
is there any risk of it not burning correctly if i do it?
Yeah there is some risk but you can always flash back if you get burn errors. Still the only real risk is if the drive cant be recognized and then the drive wouldn't flash. You will probably be ok but I wanna make shure you know what your getting into.

it said something like NEC 7800A v1.0a/1.07a not found
Did you tell it to suppress overwrite prompt and did you get the drive letter correct. If that doesn't work yo may have to have the ROM hacked in order to flash it. Can you zip the files the program wrote to your floppy and send them to me.

anyone try to flash a 16x plextor to a 24x?
im thinking about it, but i wouldnt wanna kill it..
altho plex does have a 40x out now, so thats more more reason to try this... hehe.. ill do it the next time i deside that i need to burn a cd :)
Dissolved I doubt that a 16x plextor could be upgraded since its not a variable speed writer. The new 24x burner may be upgradable since its probably the same as the new 32x and 40x.
Kentucky Fried Bird just upgraded his burner from an 8x to a 10x. Here is what he had to say about the upgrade.
Kentucky Fried Bird
"I have a hp Cd-Writer Plus 9110 (the 9100 series is the same, its only the bundled software that is different) and now it *is* a 9300. All I had to do was flash the ROM/firmware.
I have successfully burned at 10x using the new hp RecordNow software that I got from their website.
Bender, that sounds cool, but hasn't cdrinfo got it covered? Maybe I am lazy, (I am) but what could we do that they haven't? Let me know what you're thinking via PM and I will help if the Mods/Editors/Webmasters at OC.com are down with it."
To answare the question again I am trying to make a more comprehensive drive upgrade database. Even if we find out most drives arent upgradable we will want it in the database so others will know if they should even try. I found absolutely no info for my Acer but I was still able to upgrade it. I'll even try upgrading my Sanyo 24x once I find the correct rom.
Looked around but not sure if I'm peaking under the right rocks.
How about an Acer CRW1832A 10x8x32 re-writer? It is flash upgradeable. Couldn't find much on it as it's over a year old.

Bender:
i tried getting the firmware upgrade for the NEC 7800a, and the link you gave appears to be dead. i did manage to find another place to download (http://support.euro.dell.com/de/de/filelib/download/download.asp?fileid=R34791&format=38641&sid=PLX_PNT_P3C_GX150&st=) it though.
You know what I tried and tried to get that drive to work but not go. The link is dead because I couldnt get it to upgrade the rom.

All I can find so far for your TDK is This (http://www.megagames.com/console/cd/tdk2plex.zip). It upgrades your drive to a Plextor 12/10/32. Sorry its not any faster. I'm not shure if it unlocks any new features or not. Make shure to take all other drives off your ide when you flash.

Don't worry I'm crying along side you. The burner Overclocking thing isn't going very far very fast but I'm not giving up yet. It is so easy to just to buy a new burner thats way faster than to upgrade. With some of the new 24x burners there may still be some overclocking potential left. I'll try my sanyo as soon as the rom is released.

I'd recommend against that actually. If doing that will result in a range between destroying the drive on the low end and bringing about a 0% speed increase on the high end then I wouldn't risk it.

hmmm seems your quite busy lookin at wether its possible to oc these nice young chaps' burners so while your at it, whats out there for a sony CRX140E
I'd be curious to know about the 24x10x40 Lite-on burners, an increase to 32 would be :burn:
Dagon I think you can upgrade a 24x liteon if you hex edit the rom.
I havn't fogot the rest of you guys. I'm working on it. From helping many people out with overclocking there burners it seems as if most modern burners must be hex edited in order to work. Hex editing is extremely tough even if you know what your doing. To hex edit your rom you need the origional rom and the one you wan to flash. To hex the rom (pun intended) you compair the header, checksum or whatever is causing the flash program to not flash your rom. If your lucky you will be able to change whatever needs changing in the rom so it will flash. Another thing I have noticed is that no 16x drives can be upgraded to 24x. The reason is because the new 24x+ drives write at variable speeds. 16x and lower drives burn at a fixed speed.

I finally got ahold of the 32x rom for my 24x sanyo today. First thing I did was try and flash the rom but the program wuldn't let me. Next I opened up my trusty hex editer Ultra Edit and took a careful look at the 24x rom and the 32x rom side by side. I tried a thing or two and then I stumbled uppon the solution. My drive model is BP1500 and the 32x version is BP1600 so I foudn the correct string and changed the PB1600 rom to read BP1500. Just my luck the rom flashed without a hitch. I rebooted and windows found a Sanyo PB1600 32x drive. The only problem was the drive door didn't open and nothing else about the drive worked. Back to square one. I flashed the old rom but I got an error half way through the process. I rebooted and finally the flash took and I'm back to a working 24x burner and a lot more knowledge under my belt. This is just one example of what can happen while Overclocking your buner. Sometimes you cant get the rom to flash sometimes it flashes and the drive is forever lost and sometimes if your very lucky you end up with a working overclocked burner.

Are there any possibilities to upgrade Yamaha2100S (16x10x40) ?

I just updated my firmware on a Mitsumi 24X12X40 from a version 1.0b to 1.0c off of their site and am having poor results. I tested a 350Mb burn and it took 5+ minutes. I used to be able to burn 700Mb in 4+ minutes... WTF! This ain't no upgrade, it's a downgrade. Anybody else run into something like this? I use Nero.
gone_fishin try going back to the older rom. What OS are you using? If its XP then try uninstalling the hard disc controllers and let XP reinstall them. If XP experiences problems with a device it can change the mode of the drive so its more reliable but not as fast.

I think nero will only let you burn at 4x because your media is only rated up to 4x. If you get 10x media nero should be fine.

any firmware for a sony crx 140e???
Here's a slightly off-topic question but I think it's close enough to fit here. I have the Panasonic 7586 (8X4X32). It has 2meg of cache but some of those models have 8meg of cache. If I cracked mine open would I find an easy to add to socket to upgrade the cache? Has anyone opened one of these up before?
You might be able to do it if you can find the chips. The only problem is their might be more circutry you have to add for the ram to be used. If you can find the chips give it a try. I have been able to replace ram chips on laptop memory so If you have to solder it send it over to me.
Well I think I'll wait a while at least and see if someone else has already cracked open their 7586 and can give me a definate answer from personal experience first.

Hey Bender,
I'm trying to edit a rom file to upgrade my Aopen, and I'm just wondering if all you did was change the checksum value and it worked after that.
I know mine still may not work, just wondering what you did.
All I did was figure out the checksum and change the value and it flashed. I have been able to do this with CD drive bioses and motherboard bioses. Most of the time its in the header near the beginning of the file. Sometimes its as simple as changing the internal name of the rom.
For the rest of you who I havn't repleid to I'm really sorry but I'm tight on time now. Do a little reserch at CDRinfo.com and see what you can dig up. Most drives havn't been tried yet so I really don't know what will work. If you think the specs for your drive are close enough to the faster model of the drive you may be able to upgrade. All the 16x drives I have seen so far cant be upgraded to 24x because 24x+ drives are variable speed. On more modern drives 99% of the time you will have to hex edit the rom before it will even flash. If you can do some reserch and give me a few more details it will be a lot easier for me to help you out.

I know how my electronics looks like, so I can see the difference between these two, and see if there's something more than just a firmware...
Send me high-quality photos of the electronics.. Just open the CD-ROM, and photograph the bigger board (the smaller one is not of any interest)... And, if you can, write down all the chips and send this data too...
I believe it can be done, but only if the parts match...
And, photos are used when I search for the different resistor placings... :)
Hope I'll somehow help you...

Huhh... Bender... Just one thing... Let's make things this way...
I am working much with the CD-ROM/R/RW devices... And, found a way to overclock them without touching the firmware...
Now, my interest concerning you...
Let's ask these people to photograph the electronics of their CD-R/RW/ROMs, and look at these pictures... Look at the pictures of the better ones, and look for differences... If there is the same electronics/mechanics, maybe the overclocking will pass...
It's no use looking at the firmware only... It'll be wise to look at the inner parts of the CD-R/RW...
Also, it'll be pretty wise to write down all the chips on the boards, and we could somhow decipher this data, and see if it's upgradable...
What do you think? I'm pretty interested...
Right now, I would like to see the boards of Plextor 16/10/40 and 24/10/40, because I think they are made of same components, but the firmware is different... I don't know, but I'm asking for pictures...
Anyone interested besides me?

It's not technically overclocking since I do not believe that the CD-R's speed is regulated by a clock generator (unless it has an AC motor ;)

Do you have any other work for it? Nevermind... Just call it overclocking as we do, and it'll be fine... At least everybody knows what we are talking about here... :)

I can't remember where but I read that the Liteon 40x burner can be straight flashed to 48x . Good news for those with that drive
And I am still wondering whether or not I should upgrade my 4x burner

I just bought the liteon 40x12x48 and installed it this morning. I burned a cd with 693 megs in 127 seconds. While I only paid $62 for it delivered I think I'm pretty happy with 40x. When I flashed my 8x to 12x I noticed a drastic improvement but I had to flash it twice. Going from 2 to 4 doubles your speed and even going from 8 to 12 is a 50% increase but I'd leave flashing a 40 to 48 speed to those who really need the 20 seconds. Flashing isn't rocket science but there is a risk to your hardware.
I looked around to see if anyone was talking about the flash upgrade for Liteon and the latest news I found was at cdrinfo and its UK site and that was for the 8 to 12 upgrade. It looks like they have'nt updated in a while. If anyone has links to newer information please post.

That drive is not upgradable. I have this drive so I was able to get the bios to flash to the 32x rom but it didnt burn at all. It detected the drive as the 32x model but thats all. The CD tray wouldnt even open. Thankfully I was able to flash back to the origional rom and everything is back to normal.
I'll help the rest of you guys out as soon as I have a little free time. You can check out www.cdrinfo.com for update roms. They dont have much on burner overclocking especially for newer drives but its better than nothing.
