Vuze, the bittorrent client formerly known as Azereus has a new version out that has a built in media server that works with both the 360 and PS3 as well as Apple TV (if anybody has one of those).

You don't need to download or seed a torrent in oder to use it. Just create a torrent file linking to the source file and then open it in the appropriate folder, PS3, 360 or PS3. It will transcode it on the fly or you can wait until it has finished.

All you have to do is install the prog and create your torrent file as a link to the source file then open it in either the PS3, 360 or Apple TV folder.

Then go to the PS3 and turn it on, it may take a bit but it will eventually come up with the Vuze icon and the ip address of the machine it is on as an available media server.

On the 360, you'll have to go to search for media servers in the dashboard. It may take a few times but it will eventually find it.

I don't have one so I don't know how it works on Apple TV

When you open it in the PS3, 360 or Apple TV folder it will give you the option of standard definition or high. I always choose high.

I would not use this just to convert Avi, DivX, MKV etc... files to MP4. It works well but there are stand alone programs out there that move at light speed compared to this.

That's all there is to it. It works really well.

P.S. This is April 2nd so this is not a joke.

Vista and Windows 7 seem to have UPNP media sharing that works with both as well, if you have a newer windows. Good suggestion for non windows boxes though.

I use Tversity as my 360 media server. Any reason to switch to Vuze?

not really, tversity still does everything good.

especially if you dont torrent...considering this only really benefits those who download "borderline illegal" torrents

I just started utilizing my X360 as a media server. And while decent on my PC, I found a program called Encode360 that works at encoding my files to .wmv's decently quick with good quality for me to view.

Mind you it takes roughly the length of the show to do the encoding but it takes next to nothing in CPU resources on the PC view it. At least this way for me once I do it its done, no extra horse power required.

On topic though, this would essentially encode on the fly any format the 360 can't play?

yeah, as long as you've got the codecs. So say MKV HD stuff, it encodes and streams. Plus it's multiformat not just Windoze.

I use PS3 media server and it is just stupid simple. Install the program, select the folders to share, and that's it. It shows up on both the 360 and PS3 without any other changes.

It is a transcoder so it will take a bit of CPU power, I am in the process of upgrading the CPU in my server as the single core sparta just isn't up to the task. The benefit of it is it will take pretty much any file type and convert it on the fly so your PS3 and 360 can play it. I have spent countless hours trying to get encode settings my 360 liked, now its now a worry.
