View Full Version : My 9600gt Calibre not going full speed?
Hey everyone,
I am concerned about my graphics card. I purchased it yesterday, plugged it in to the mother board and another plug at the back of the card from the psu, used driver cleaner to remove old drivers and installed the latest driver.
The problem is, in pc wizard i dont think the card is running at full speed. I even tried doing a stress test in counter strike source, and it seems very choppy.
Do you guys think my card didnt get installed properly??
Here are the details from pc wizard:

Is the specs in your sig accurate?

If you are using the Thermaltake 430W TR2 PSU then there is a problem. It only has 18A on the 12V rail, and the 9600gt needs 26A or more. I would recommend a decent 500W and that should fix the problem. Other than that have you updated drivers? Get GPU-z and throw in a screenshot of that, search google for it as it is a free programme.

Check your PCIe link width. You can use CPU-Z (motherboard tab) or GPU-Z.
To further what Badbonji said...if you get a new PSU don't just look at the Wattage rating. Look at the rails. I highly suggest a strong single rail unit like anything from Corsair or PC P&C w/ at least 30A on the 12v rail.
ok cool, ill post the screenshot of gpuz when i get home. The specs in my sig are 2006 lol , i haven't been using this site since I was in to overclocking my barton 2600xp :), and then the whole system just short circuited heh. the only thing that survived is the power supply which im using now and the geforce 6.
Do you guys think i should get the latest drivers from the Sparkle website, or the nvidia one. The drivers on the sparkle site are 120mb's and the nvidia ones are 100mb..
Thanks

Always get them from nVidia.
Ok here is a screenshot of gpuz

Shouldn't this card be factory overclocked higher or are these the correct results?
Thanks

If it is the oc'ed edition then yes, but those are what I have seen on 9600's. As for the drivers, try the betas from nvidia as they are always good to me.

That is factory overclocked, the stock is 650Mhz.
You can always try for more, but everything seems fine on there, PCI-e running at normal speed.
Next thing to try is the newest/beta drivers.
thanks guys,
i have to say though i am not overly impressed with this card... I max out all details in counter strike source and i still get fps drops for some reason :/
Maybe its just my crappy cpu? you guys think i should overclock my x2 4800+ or wont it make any difference??

what fps do you get at what resolution?
In comparison, a single 8800gts (should offer a bit more over the 9600gt) offered me around 90-120fps on a Q9450, with 1920x1200 and maximum settings. You should at least get 60fps.
Source loves fast single core cpu's though, dual core doesn't help unless in the newest source (l4d, ep2 etc...)
A core i7 at 4Ghz will not be any faster than a E8400 at 4Ghz in this game. Time to overclock the CPU!

Ok with every setting maxed out, my fps is stable, locked at 60fps for some reason. It wont go above but the gameplay is smooth so i guess thats alright.
I believe it is time to get a new power supply though!

Ok, to remove that 60fps limit just turn off v-sync in settings :P
