View Full Version : eSATA transfer speed issue
I just bought a new Seagate Freeagent extreme to offset the lost storage space that I incurred by switching to dual 30 gb ssd's in RAID 0. Anyhow, the size is 1.5 tb, and I have it hooked up via eSATA to a p-7805u Gateway FX laptop. I'm trying to move all of my videos and tv shows over from my current hard drive, Scorpio Black 320 GB, before installing my SSD's. However, I'm only seeing a max of 56.1 Mbps while transferring via windows explorer in Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. Is there some trick I'm missing that I have to do in order to get even close to the advertised 1.5 Gbps transfer speed? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

1.5 Gbps is the max transfer speed of the eSATA, you'll never get anywhere near that in real world transfers, you might be able to pull a bit more than 56 Mbps with some tweaking but it won't get too much faster

are you seeing 56megabits, or 56 megabytes per second?
Are you moving big files, or small ones also?

This is sort of what I was thinking. I guess there's really not all that much of a benefit of using eSATA over USB 2.0 right now then.

Mostly, big files 200 MB - 1 GB. And it is Megabyte.

It's possible that you are at the write speed limit for the other drive.
